TWP/MICROBASE/C3 - Detection of precipitation is suspect
DataStreams:twpmicrobasepi2C3.c1
Description:
Microbase uses the CloudBasePrecipitation field from the twparscl1clothC3.c1 product to
determine the occurrence of precipitation. The twparscl1clothC3.c1 CloudBasePrecipitation
field is partially derived from the precip_mean field in the twpsmet60sC3.b1 product.
DQR D060426.8 indicates there is a grounding issue with the optical rain gauge and the
precip_mean values from twpsmet60sC1.b1 are suspect over this period.

As a result, the values in the Microbase aqc_precip field could be suspect. Values of
"14" to indicate precipitation in the Microbase aqc_liquid_water_content and
aqc_liq_effective_radius fields could be suspect as well. Because we aren't certain when precipitation
occurred, values of liquid_water_content and liq_effective_radius should be carefully
evaluated during this period.
Suggestions:
Because manual quality control is performed before determining values for the

CloudBasePrecipitation in twparscl1clothC3.c1, you may be able to reliably use some of the
aqc_liquid_water_content values in Microbase to determine when precipitation occurred.
However, you may want to compare the indicated times of precipitation to values of the
precip_mean field from the twpsmet60sC3.b1 product to determine if precipitation occurred.

Use the twpsmet60sC3.b1 data with caution as there was a grounding issue with the optical rain gauge over this period. You may need to subtract a background value of up to 0.10 mm/hr from the precip_mean values. Please see DQR D060426.8 for more details on this issue.
