Description: | The current dlprofwind4news VAP generates time- and height-resolved estimates of wind speed, wind direction, and corresponding uncertainties from Doppler lidar PPI scans. A recent comparison with a heavily instrumented tall tower (BAO) has shown that the error estimates are biased low and exhibit poor correlation with the observed lidar-tower differences. We note that the measurements themselves (i.e. wind speed and direction) are minimally affected by this issue. |
Suggestions: | Users should not use the reported error estimates to quantify uncertainty in the wind speed and wind direction measurements. Users should also not use the reported error estimates as a means of quality control. As a work around, quality control should be based on the fit residual (i.e. the variable called "residual"). |
