Subject:
SHB/GNDRAD/C1 - Surface viewed by sensors is occasionally shaded
DataStreams:shbgndrad60sC1.a1
Description:
The shadow of the Des Grosseillers and other pieces of equipment cause the area underneath
the GNDRAD stand to be shaded sometimes between the hours of 10 and 21 GMT. On 05/24/98
an operator reported: "Between about 10:15 and 10:45 the shadow of the Des Groseilliers
falls over the GNDRAD stand and instruments. The operator used to service the GNDRAD after
servicing the SKYRAD near solar noon. However, because access to the GNDRAD is from the
south, this placed his shadow beneath the instruments which was readily apparent in the
data. The operator altered his schedule to service the GNDRAD either early in the morning
or late at night when he would not significantly shade the sensed surface." Another
operators report on 05/23/98 noted that, for the NET, during the time from 10 GMT to 21 GMT,
"The shadows of the legs of the groundstand consecutively pass through the snow directly
in the middle of the stand at these times. " Other example of shading can be seen on
06/14/98.A full report on shadowing would need to be derived from a variety of
instrumentation under clear skies.
