Description: | There were large differences between the measured downwelling
shortwave (DS) and the downwelling shortwave calculated from direct
(NIP) and diffuse (DD) readings. It appears that the direct normal
shortwave readings were much too low, particularly on 7/14 and 7/15.
It appears that the diffuse instrument was being shaded properly, but
the NIP was not tracking the sun.
The problem was corrected during the preventative maintenance visit on
7/16/03 at 1840GMT. The technician reported doing the quarterly
connection corrosion checks and ventilator fan cleaning, the NIP was
described as having "dry-light dust" on the window, no mention of
tracker alignment was made. Although uncertain, a bad connection at
some point in the instrument wiring was likely to blame and was
eliminated during the corrosion inspection process. |

Description: | Downwelling shortwave (DS) values frequently drop below -10 W/m^2 at night, and are
consistently 20-40 W/m^2 less than the calculated downwelling shortwave during the day in
clear-sky conditions. Corrective maintenance on 12/1/2004 corrected this offset. It is not
clear which CM action corrected the problem since the DS instrument cable was grounded to a
new location and the DS ventilator fan was found in poor condition and was replaced.
Either of these issues could have led to the problem observed in this instrument. |

Description: | Incorrect coefficients were applied to the upwelling longwave radiation
measurement instrument (i.e. pyrgeometer, SIRS acroynm "UIR") during
this time period.
For a PIR mounted in an upwelling measurement orientation (UIR), the
thermopile output is extremely low compared to a downwelling PIR (DIR).
In addition, the UIR case and dome temperature differences are much
smaller than a DIR. This results in the pyrgeometer receiver radiation
term, Wr (NREL/Hickey equation) or Wc (Albrecht/Cox equation), dominating
all other terms of the infrared radiant flux equation.
Since the receiver radiation term uses coefficients in both forms of
the pyrgeometer equations nearly equal to 1.0 +- <1% the result is a
measurement of incoming longwave radiant flux relatively insensitive

Evaluation of the problem data shows the expected error of the data
(before correction) will be within 1% - less than the uncertainty of
the instrument (Eppley PIR greater of 5% or 5 W/m2)
To correct the one minute data found in the a1 or b1 datastream follow
this procedure:
1) Obtain the following variables from the b1 datafile:
inst_up_long_dome_temp
inst_up_long_case_temp
up_long_netir
2) For each one minute data entry in b1
tpUIR[uV] = up_long_netir[uV]/0.2523876[W/m2/uV]
3) Apply for each one minute data entry:
WinUIR(W/m2)=k*V+ Sigma*Tc^4 -4*Sigma*(Td^4 - Tc^4)
=[0.28902*tpUIR]+[Sigma*inst_up_long_case_temp^4]
-[4*Sigma*(inst_up_long_dome_temp^4-inst_up_long_case^4)]
where, Sigma = 5.6697E-8 (Stefan-Boltzman Const)
Other datastream corrections that use the UIR measurements will require
similar corrections.

Description: | The NIP is shaded by the EF laptop computer enclosure near sunrise during parts of the
Spring and Summer. This has occurred from 04/08 to 05/20 and from 07/26 to 09/06 every year
since 2001 and will occur during these date ranges in the future as well. The shading
occurs for a few minutes each day between 1200 and 1300 GMT depending on the time of the
year. For the early dates, shading occurs a little after 1200 GMT and by 05/20 shading
happens nearer to 1300 GMT. In late July the shading occurs near 1300 GMT and closer to
1200 GMT by 09/06. |
