Subject: | NSA/METTWR/C1 - C1 WIND SPEED DATA QUESTIONABLE |
DataStreams: | nsamettwrC1.a1, nsamettwrC1.b1 |
Description: | The anemometers located at all 4 levels (2m, 10m, 20m, and 40m) are heated anemometers. The thermistors controlling the amount of power applied to the cups of the anemometers failed. This caused too much power to be sent to the heating elements. The cups bubbled and, in some cases, completely melted through. |

Subject: | NSA/METTWR/C1 - C1 WIND DIRECTION DATA SUSPECT |
DataStreams: | nsamettwrC1.a1, nsamettwrC1.b1 |
Description: | The wind direction sensor at the 10m level and 20m level became frozen. The senor at the 10m level became frozen on July 25 2001. The date that the 20m level became frozen is unknown but occurred after the 10m level became frozen. Both sensors froze in such a way as to consistently report wind direction values out of the south. |

Subject: | NSA/TOWER - Mislabeled tower sensors |
DataStreams: | nsametC1.00, nsamettwrC1.a1 |
Description: | The NSA tower data displayed on the local computer screen had the height mislabeled. Data written to files were correct. When the data acquisition program was fixed on 22 OCT 1998, only the computer display was changed. |

Subject: | NSA/METTOWER - Questionable NSA Met-tower wind data |
DataStreams: | nsametC1.00, nsamettwrC1.a1 |
Description: | The data analysis software for the NSA Met_tower system was upgraded at 2200 GMT on 8 SEP 1999. The upgrade included replacement of missing data with -99.99's when the routine that polled the Met-tower sensors timed out. This resulted in large negative spikes in the 1-min averages. These spikes almost always occurred during the first several 1-min periods of a half-hour data processing routine. On 25 OCT 1999 at 2300 the routine that replaced missing data was changed to insert the previous 1-min averaged data instead of -99.99. Since at the most only one or two values are missing in ay averaging period, this change results in a reasonable estimate of the true mean values |

Subject: | NSA/METTOWER - Questionable NSA Met-tower wind data |
DataStreams: | nsametC1.00, nsamettwrC1.a1 |
Description: | The data analysis software for the NSA Met-tower system was upgraded at 2200 GMT on 8 SEP 1999. The upgrade included insertion of -99.99's for the wind vectors when the wind speed or direction were either missing or equal to 0. This resulted in incorrect vector averaged wind speed, wind direction, and standard deviation of wind direction. When this occurred, the vector-averaged wind speed and standard deviation of wind direction were often abnormally high and the vector-averaged wind direction was often approximately 225 deg. Starting at 2300 GMT on 25 OCT 99 missing wind data were replaced by the previous 1-min average and starting at 2200 GMT on 15 NOV 1999 the computed wind vectors were used whenever wind speeds or wind directions were 0. |

Subject: | NSA/METOWER - Reprocess: Incorrect NSA wind direction minima and maxima |
DataStreams: | nsametC1.00, nsamettwrC1.a1 |
Description: | From the time of installation of the NSA C1 Met-tower system on 24 MAR 1998 until 29 NOV 1999 all wind direction minima and maxima were reported as raw (unrotated) data. In order to obtain correct minima and maxima 30 deg must be subtracted from the value. All mean wind directions were computed from rotated (corrected) data. |
