Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C1 - Failed PSP ventilator fan |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad20sC1.a0, twpskyrad60sC1.b1 |
Description: | On 1/31 the ventilator for the PSP measuring downwelling_shortwave_hemispheric irradiance failed. The DQ effect of this failure on the measurement of down_short_hemisp is not possible to fully quantify but it has been noted that during these failures the PSP nighttime values can be several (1-3W/m2) smaller than usual. Another effect is slower thermal response (1hr) of the PSP instrument due to daytime heating and cooling of the ventilator housing. |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C2 - Direct Normal reading too low |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad20sC2.a0, twpskyrad60sC2.b1, twpskyradC2.00 |
Description: | The NIP (direct_normal shortwave irradiance) measurement was reading too low during this time period. No TWP Ops documentation could be found to determine the cause but data review indicate that the NIP appeared to be reading low by about 25W/m2 during this period. The NIP data had well defined steps in irradiance when compared to three component checks indicating the problem period. |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C1 - Tracker Failure |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad20sC1.a0, twpskyrad60sC1.b1 |
Description: | The solar tracker at C1 failed to wake up the morning of 6/10 approximately 2000GMT. Ops discovered problem and reset tracker 6/12 approximately 0800GMT. Tracker dependent instrument data is inaccurate - this includes the short_direct (NIP) and down_short_diffuse_hemisp (8-48). The down_short_hemisp (PSP) and down_long_hemisp (PIR) are unaffected. |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C1 - PIR2 ventilator fan failure |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad20sC1.a0, twpskyrad60sC1.b1 |
Description: | During the time range specified the PIR2 output is questionable due to ventilator fan failure. Although the PIR is temperature compensated, data review indicates that the PIR2 didn't compare as well with PIR1. Typical differences during full sun are approximately 10 w/m2. During this time period differences of 10-14 W/m2 were noted. |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C1 - IRT measurement error |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad60sC1.b1 |
Description: | The IRT was not able to measure sky temperatures below 273.2 K. (This instrument was the same one damaged by lightning in November 2005 in Darwin. It was returned for repair in April 2006 and again in April 2007 and both times calibrated only down to 0 deg C, so the problem was neither detected nor repaired.) The problem was corrected by replacing the IRT. |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C3 - Direct normal instrument failure |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad20sC3.a0, twpskyrad60sC3.b1 |
Description: | The NIP instrument (short_direct_normal data stream) failed giving bad data during this time period. The failure start time coincides with a reported DC power failure but no connection between the reported power failure and the failure of this instrument could be determined. Ops also reported the tracker clock running 2.9 minutes slow during maintenance on 12/22 0300GMT (see CS-2008-0714). Again, the slow clock is not suspect and did not appear to affect alignment. Ops replaced the NIP instrument on 12/30 and short_direct_normal data resumed normal operation. Disregard the short_direct_normal (NIP) data during this time period or calculate using the global and diffuse instruments and the following relationship: short_direct_normal = ((down_short_hemisp - down_short_diffuse_hemisp))/cos(zenith angle) |

Subject: | TWP/SKYRAD/C3 - Tracker inoperative |
DataStreams: | twpskyrad20sC3.a0, twpskyrad60sC3.b1 |
Description: | The tracker at Darwin failed 01/23. The tracker was power cycled on 01/27 and it returned to normal operation. The affected data streams are short_direct_normal (NIP) and down_short_diffuse_hemisp (8-48). The down_short_hemisp are not affected. The down_long_hemisp1 and 2 (PIR1 and PIR2) should not be affected but direct sun can affect individual instrument performance. |

DataStreams: | twpskyrad20sC2.a0, twpskyrad60sC2.b1 |
Description: | During this time period the IRT analog output line appears to have adversely affected the skyrad datalogger grounding. This resulted in intermittent anomalous readings across all skyrad datalogger channels including logger voltage. |
