Subject: | SGP/MFRSR/E4 - Bad head temp and voltage data |
DataStreams: | sgpmfrsrE4.00, sgpmfrsrE4.a0, sgpmfrsrE4.b1 |
Description: | Detector voltage and head temperature were erratic and at times wholly incorrect. The first sign of this is on 20040524 just after 2000 UTC. Sporadic irregularities are not altogether unusual, so by itself this is an incident of not much concern. As time went on, however, the erratic readings become more frequent and the head temperature began to be affected as well. Ultimately the problem was traced to a faulty signal cable. The cable was replaced on 20050921 and the head temperature immediately responded with normal readings. The voltage was still a little noisy for a few days, but ultimately reads near constant as expected. Not sure why the voltage was still noisy for those days, but it could either be within normal bounds for this instrument, or possibly the new cable wasn't making a good connection at first. The good news is the mentor believes the irradiance data during the time covered by this DQR are good, so this issue should be essentially transparent to the data user. |

Subject: | SGP/MFRSR/E4 - Erratic head temp and missing irradiance data |
DataStreams: | sgpmfrsrE4.00, sgpmfrsrE4.a0, sgpmfrsrE4.b1 |
Description: | This problem started out with erratic/low head temperature, and expanded to include missing irradiance data. Maintenance on 8/24 had the unexpected result of causing channels 870 and 940 to flat line. The 8/24 maintenance did not fix the head temp problem. On 9/21 maintenance fixed the temp and irradiance issue. Notwithstanding the low head temps, the irradiance data (when available) look OK. However, because the instrument is calibrated and designed to run with temps around 40, be cautious about using data covered by this DQR. |

Subject: | SGP/MFRSR/E5 - Data not quality assured |
DataStreams: | sgpmfrsrE5.a0, sgpmfrsrE5.b1 |
Description: | Data from October 1, 1999 through March 2001 from MFRSR.E5 should be used with caution. During this time period only minimal quality control and maintenance were provided to the SGP extended facility MFRSRs because these data were considered to be of questionable value under the best of circumstances. That decision was reversed in 2001 when Joe Michalsky identified a means to make the MFRSR data scientifically useable. In the interim, the MFRSRs developed problems with shading, leveling, calibration and all-out hardware failures and the stock of spare MFRSRs was depleted and not replenished. Most of the shading and leveling problems have now been corrected in the field as well as possible, but almost all of the extended facilty MFRSRs still need to be recalibrated or replaced. |

It seemed to self-correct after 20060419, but came back briefly between 20060519 1600 UTC through 20060520 0200 UTC. It again appeared 20060524 to 20050526 between the hours of 1800 and 0200. A final brief period of a shading problem occurred between 2000 and 2200 UTC on 20060528. The motor was replaced on the 31st resolving the problem. |

Subject: | SGP/MFRSR/E4 - Offset contamination at sunrise/sunset |
DataStreams: | sgpmfrsrE4.a0, sgpmfrsrE4.b1 |
Description: | The 415 nm filters, 500 nm filters, & 673 nm filters were flatlining in the morning and late afternoon hours. The flatlining is an artifact of the ingest. Nighttime offsets are determined each night and added back to the following day's data. If the offset is large negative, it will report the offset value until the data in the day go positive. When the instrument is running in shadowband mode negative values are not reported, resulting in the flatline behavior. This issue is generally only seen just after sunrise and just before sunset on cloudy/overcast days. |
