DataStreams: | nsaaerich1C1.a1, nsaaerich2C1.a1, nsaaerisummaryC1.a1, nsaaeriengineerC1.a1 |
Description: | In January 2003, the cryogenic cooler current for the Barrow, AERI detector was steadily increasing. This increase is a sign of cooler failure. On January 16,2003, the cooler began to make noise. The cooler was shut-off on January 17,2003 and any condensed gases were allowed to vent. Condensed gases in the detector dewar cause a cooler to work harder and increase the current. The cooler was then resealed and turned on. However, the cooler did not recover and the current was at a maximum. The cooler was unable to completely cool the detector and the detector never achieved a temperature below 72K. Higher detector temperature increases instrument noise. The instrument was shut off on January 20, 2003 at 1835GMT to prevent a catatrophic failure due to complete cooler failure and repressurization of the detector dewar, which would result in a subsequent implosion of the dewar. |

Description: | The cryogenic cooler current reached its maximum value, which indicates a potential failure of the cooler unit. The effect of the cooler failure is an increase in detector temperature. Detector temperature is normally 69K. At temperatures in excess of 72K, the long wave responsivity decreases due to detector noise. During the period of March 27, 2003 @ 21:02 GMT through April 10, 2003 @ 23:42 GMT, the cooler current was at its maximum and detector temperatures varied from 72-75K. The increase in detector noise may affect some calculations. |

Description: | The SGP.C1 AERI system clock was not being regularly checked and synched with a time server between May 2001 and November 2001. When the problem was identified and the clock was corrected, a time offset of 17 minutes and 2 seconds (slow) was present. The data available from the ARM Archive have been time corrected by Dave Turner using a piece-wise linear function based on a comparison of pressure data from the AERI and SMOS. Dave indicates "this results in a good fit to the data" and "errors in the reported sample times are reduced to approximately 1 minute or less. Given the nominal three minute averaging period of the AERI, this should suffice for most applications." Data between 20011019.1615-20011029.1621 did not need to be corrected due to a series of events that caused the clock to be temporarily synched and then revert back to the linear drift pattern. Note, there are three other variables in the AERI data products which report time: Time, timeHHMMSS and rawTimeHHMMSS. The data in these variables were not modified, so these data will not agree with basetime + time_offset. Also note, VAPs which use the AERI data as input were NOT reprocessed. VAP data during the time period specified are questionable and should be used with caution. |

Description: | The NSA.C1 AERI data for 19990321 and 19990324 were processed on July 23, 2004 using version 1.24 of the ingest. This resulted in the creation of .b1 level data files. Because the other March 1999 data are .a1 level data files, the .b1 files were modified using nc_tools (nc_copy, ncvarrename, ncattcopy) to create .a1 level data files. The data in the files were not changed in anyway. Only header modifications were made. The user may notice small header differences between these files and others from March 1999. |

Description: | The blower motor failed on February 9, estimated time 23:00 GMT. The problem was repaired on February 10, 23:00 GMT. The blower motor serves two functions. It maintains the instrument window enclosure at the outside temperature and blows ice crystals from the enclosure. Failure of the motor caused the enclosure temperature to increase by approximately 12K (from 255 to 267K). Previous experience in comparing arctic instruments with the blower on and off have shown that if ice crystals enter the enclosure, there is a slight increase in the 3-5 um (ch 2) spectral intensity. It is unlikely that Ch 1 is affected. |

Subject: | NSA/AERI/C1 - Excessive Noise in C1 AERI data |
DataStreams: | nsaaerich1C1.b1, nsaaerisummaryC1.b1 |
Description: | Initially it was believed that the greater noise level in AERI C1 data was due to the extended range detector, which has lower sensitivity. However, when the S01 AERI was installed next to the C1 AERI and it stabilized on 9/30/2005, it was observed that the noise levels on the newly installed S01 AERI were much lower than for the C1 AERI. Therefore, the excessive noise of the C1 AERI is not due to the fundamental nature of the extended range detector but instead due to failure within the detector. The failure could be due to a poor D* value of too high a detector temperature. It could also be caused by optical alignment issues. In either case, the spectral radiance data have much more noise and that results in larger error bars when using the radiance data, especially long wave data as monitored by the LW_HBB_NEN flag. On 9/30/2005, the S01 AERI, which is next to the C1 AERI, came on-line and is producing low noise data. The S01 data should be used instead of the C1 data where low noise requirements are needed. On 6/26/2006, the S01 AERI went offline due to a laser failure. The C1 AERI was moved to the connex where data were within reasonable limits for an extended range detector. Beginning 20060701, the C1 data are the preferred AERI data set at the NSA Barrow location. |

Description: | On 18 Oct 2006, a thermistor that measures the temperature of the blackbody support structure failed, resulting in erroneously high values. This measurement, which is captured by the field "BBsupportStructureTemp", provides the temperature of the radiance that is reflected into the blackbody (i.e., captured by the field "calibrationAmbientTemp"), and thus the calibrated radiance (the field "mean_rad") was incorrect and outside the ARM specification that the AERI data should be absolutely calibrated to within 1% of the ambient radiance. The broken thermistor was fixed on 22 Nov 2006. Fortunately, since the emissivity of the blackbodies is so high, absolute accuracy of the calibrationAmbientTemp is not required but should be within a few degrees. The radiance data have been recalibrated using the ambient blackbody temperature (the field "calibrationCBBtemp") as a surrogate of the calibrationAmbientTemp. Historically, the calibrationAmbientTemp and calibrationCBBtemp measurements have been within 1-2 deg. As a result of this recalibration, the radiance data are now absolutely calibrated to better than 1%. |

Subject: | SGP/SWS/C1 - Spectrometer heater controller failed |
DataStreams: | sgpswsC1.b1 |
Description: | A heater controller failed on the Shortwave Spectrometer instrument (SWS). The heater maintained the Silicon diode array spectrometer temperature at 27 +/-0.2 Celsius. Operatation of the instrument is not dependent on the proper operation of the heater, therefore the SWS was run during the 10 day period in which the problem was diagnosed and repaired. However, up to a 4 percent error in radiance values can be expected in the wavelength range from 900 nm to 981 nm. The SWS data spans a wavelength range of 350 nm to 2150 nm with a typical error in radiance value of 2 percent. From our analysis, the data with errors outside of the typical, only spans a small portion of the total wavelength range. An instrument calibration with the heater malfunctioning was performed on September 26, 2007, and a response function was generated by the SWS mentor. If necessary, data users can contact the mentor to obtain the response function which will improve but not eliminate completely the errors in absolute spectral radiance values measured. |

Description: | SWS instrument was taken offline for an annual calibration. Comparision of the December 19, 2007 annual calibration with the previous annual calibration done on November 8, 2006 shows very little change in the instrument sensitivity over 2007. From our analysis, there is effectively no change in the silicon spectrometer sensitivity from 400 to 981 nanometers. The InGaAs spectrometer shows a slight decrease in sensitivity of 1 to 2% over the wavelength range of 982 to 2150 nanometers, which is within our expected error range. Characterization of the change in sensitivity from 350 to 400 nanometers over the year is a bit more difficult to determine and maybe greater than our expected error of 2%. The science team at the University of Colorado is currently working on this problem. |

Description: | A strong storm with blowing and drifting snow occurred March 9th and 10th during which time the hatch remained open and snow entered the front end of the AERI enclosure. During the period, the snow obscured scene mirror views of downwelling radiance as well as views into the Black Body cavities which provide reference radiances used for calibration. Snow also collected around components inside the enclosure thereby possibly interfering with scene mirror views after the storm until the snow was removed and the front end compartment was dried late on March 13th. Possible corrupting effects apply to all measurement data streams. Measurements are probably bad during the period of the storm and suspect following the storm through March 13th. |

DataStreams: | sgpswsC1.b1, sgpswsauxC1.b1 |
Description: | During this time period the SWS experienced a problem with the temperature control InGaAs detector (for wavelength from 900-2200 nm). The problem was initially infrequent but gradually increased in frequency and duration until it was chronic and nearly continual. All data from the InGaAs during affected period is bad and unusable, but data from the Si detector (300 nm to 900 nm) is unaffected. Affected periods are easily discerned from the InGaAs_spect_temp (InGaAs spectrometer temperature) field in the sgpswsauxC1.b1 datastream. When the spectrometer is behaving properly this temperature will be held steady to a value between -9.5 and -10.7 C. When the temperature behaves erratically the InGaAs data is unusable. However the Si data is unaffected. The spectrometer connectors were disconnected and all contacts cleaned. The problem has not reappeared. |

Subject: | SGP/SWS/C1 - Contamination by scattered light on optics. |
DataStreams: | sgpswsC1.b1 |
Description: | It has been observed that the zenith radiance measurement is susceptible to contamination from light scattered off of the internal optics. This problem is most serious when measuring clear sky radiance in the presence of direct sun. Under this worst case condition, it affects short wavelengths (less than 500 nm) at a few percent level, moderate wavelengths (500-800nm) between a few percent and 10-20%, and longer wavelengths up to 80% or more. Chui and Marshak have demonstrated some success at identifying isolated affected data using the TSI to find cases of scattered clouds. In general though, one must treat the zenith radiance data with considerable caution whenever direct solar radiance is likely to be present. It is anticipated that the SWS zenith radiance for overcast skies is not significantly affected. The instrument has been renovated by adding a sun shade to prevent direct sunlight from striking the optics. An additional set of baffles further restricts the field of view, further reducing the potential for even off-axis bright clouds to affect the zenith measurement. Data taken after June 2009 is considered to be free of contamination. |

Investigation by site personnel on June 14, found numerous bird droppings in the area around the AERI-01 sky hatch plus some grass lying across a portion of the hatch opening. Using the AERI-LBLRTM QME to analyse the data after the fact it appears likely that nesting birds placed pieces of grass in a position to obstruct the AERI field of view to the sky. By some quirk of fate, the problem actually fixed itself about 12 hours before the site personnel made their inspection of the AERI viewport and discovered the evidence described above. The system has been operating normally since June 13, 1996 22:00 UTC as confirmed by a recent analysis of the AERI-LBLRTM QME results. Other observations/measurements impacted by this problem: This effects all QMEs and other analyses that use the AERI-01 data. Suggested Corrections of the Problem: (e.g. change calibration factor and recompute, flag data with this comment, etc.) It is unlikely that this data can or will be corrected. Description: | On June 10th, staff from the University of Wisconsin-Madison visited the SGP CART site to upgrade the software running on the AERI instrument. While there, they took the opportunity to perform some routine checks of the instrument. Due to these tests, data from 6/10/97 - 6/11/97 should not be ingested or used for scientific studies. The software installed was the same software as will be used on the next generation AERIs (AERI-Nexts). The AERI-Nexts have some improved hardware capabilities, which is taken advantage of by the new software. Unfortunately, as the AERI 01 at the CART site does not have these capabilities, NaNs resulted in a couple of fields in the sgpaeri01summaryC1.a1 platform. These NaNs are placeholders in arrays that were too long for the AERI01 but the correct length for the AERI-Nexts. All valid data (non-NaN data) is correct, and hence these NaNs should be ignored. A routine was modified on 6/24 which effectively fixes the problem (the size of the arrays written out is now determined by the hardware's capabilities, versus outputting a fixed length vector). |

Description: | The AERI mechanical (Stirling Cycle) detector cooler exhibited abnormal behavior during this time period which allowed the detector temperature to fluctuate outside of the normal limits. This cooler had successfully operated for over 21 months at this point, well beyond the expected lifetime before refurbishment. Only the longwave (channel 1) AERI data appears to be effected as the shortwave (channel 2) detector is less sensitive to changes in detector temperature. THE COOLER WAS REPLACED AT 23:00 UTC ON 5 OCTOBER 1997 with a spare by UW personnel who were on site for the WVIOP. |

Description: | At about 1600 UTC 30 September 1997 (970930), the CO2 fire suppression system in the optical trailer went off and AERI-01 detected a local cooling due to the colder air being forced out of the trailer. Over the next few minutes, the CO2 accumulated outside the trailer causing lower transmission to space in the 15 micron region and AERI-01 therfore detected warmer temperatures closer to the surface (T profile decreases with altitude). As more CO2 exited the trailer, the atmosphere at 15 microns became more and more opaque and AERI looses nearly all responsivity in this region. AERI gradually regains responsivity over the next 30 minutes or so as the CO2 diffuses. The strongest absorbing on-line regions from ~650-680 wavenumbers are the last to recover around 1700 UTC. A graphical description of the effect described can be found at: http://www.iop.sgp.arm.gov/~davet/970930/aeri01/index.html Besides the enhanced CO2, the instrument is effected by the rapid change of temperature of inside the optical trailer. This makes all the AERI data during the period 970930 16:00 - 17:00 UTC questionable. |

Description: | Due to a software error in the real-time calibration software, the AERI-01 radiance data between 10/96 and 6/97 were incorrectly calibrated. All of the AERI-01 radiance data collected at the SGP central facility during this time period was corrupted by this software error and were reprocessed to correct the radiance data. The error also affected all derived products of the AERI radiance data. AERI data collected prior to and after this time period was unaffected by this programming error. The proper calibrated radiance spectra was recovered from the raw archived dataset through post-processing. This reprocessing of the AERI data was carried out by the instrument mentor at PNNL and confirmed independently by Univ. of Wisconsin. The reprocessed AERI radiance data during the period 10/96 to 6/97 supercedes all previous versions of the AERI data in all instances. reprocessed, archived 9/99: sgpaeri01C1.00 reprocessed, archived 10/99: sgpaeri01ch1C1.a1 sgpaeri01ch2C1.a1 sgpaeri01engineerC1.a1 sgpaeri01summaryC1.a1 sgpaerilbldiffC1.c1 sgpaerilbldifflsC1.c1 sgplblch1C1.c0 sgplblch1C1.c1 sgplblch1lsC1.c0 sgplblch1lsC1.c1 sgplblch2C1.c0 sgplblch2C1.c1 sgplblch2lsC1.c0 sgplblch2lsC1.c1 sgpqmeaerilblC1.c1 sgpqmeaerilbllsC1.c1 sgpqmeaerimeansC1.c1 reprocessed, archived 11/99: sgpaeriprofC1.c1 sgpqmeaeriprofC1.c1 not reprocessed: sgpaerilblcloudsC1.c1 sgpaerilbldiffssC1.c1 sgpqmeaerilblssC1.c1 sgpqmeaerimeansssC1.c1 |
