DataStreams: | nsaaerich1C1.a1, nsaaerich2C1.a1, nsaaeriengineerC1.a1, nsaaerisummaryC1.a1 |
Description: | The extended range detector had failed and a borrowed replacement detector was installed. The replacement detector had enough air present in the dewar to cause the cryogenic cooler to work at full current. The detector was still warmer than optimal and there is more noise present in the data than is considered normal. The data must be used with discretion. The system was shut off on 020516 due to noise and rising detector temperatures. |

Description: | Failure of the cryogenic cooler for the AERI detector resulted in the instrument being shut down during the interval January 20, 2003 @1835GMT until January 25, 2003 @0041GMT, when a new cryogenic cooler was installed. All data are missing for this period. Data after the new cooler was installed are within normal acceptable limits. |

DataStreams: | nsaaerich1C1.a1, nsaaerich2C1.a1, nsaaeriengineerC1.a1, nsaaerisummaryC1.a1 |
Description: | In January 2003, the cryogenic cooler current for the Barrow, AERI detector was steadily increasing. This increase is a sign of cooler failure. On January 16,2003, the cooler began to make noise. The cooler was shut-off on January 17,2003 and any condensed gases were allowed to vent. Condensed gases in the detector dewar cause a cooler to work harder and increase the current. The cooler was then resealed and turned on. However, the cooler did not recover and the current was at a maximum. The cooler was unable to completely cool the detector and the detector never achieved a temperature below 72K. Higher detector temperature increases instrument noise. The instrument was shut off on January 20, 2003 at 1835GMT to prevent a catatrophic failure due to complete cooler failure and repressurization of the detector dewar, which would result in a subsequent implosion of the dewar. |

Description: | The NSA.C1 AERI data for 19990321 and 19990324 were processed on July 23, 2004 using version 1.24 of the ingest. This resulted in the creation of .b1 level data files. Because the other March 1999 data are .a1 level data files, the .b1 files were modified using nc_tools (nc_copy, ncvarrename, ncattcopy) to create .a1 level data files. The data in the files were not changed in anyway. Only header modifications were made. The user may notice small header differences between these files and others from March 1999. |

Subject: | NSA/AERI/C1 - Hatch status in datastream suspect |
DataStreams: | nsaaerich1C1.a1, nsaaerich1C1.b1, nsaaerich2C1.a1, nsaaerich2C1.b1 |
Description: | The AERI has an external hatch that covers the foreoptics in precipitating conditions to minimize the exposure of these foreoptics (and in particular the scene mirror) to rain. Physical limit switches are used to detect if the hatch is open or closed, and the hatch's status is determined by the hatch controller and included in the AERI datastream. During this period of time, the hatch was determined to be indicated as open too frequently. Analysis of several case studies suggested that the hatch was actually opening and closing properly but that its status was not being correctly reported by the hatch controller to the datastream. This is a problem because the hatch may be indicated as open in the datastream when in reality it was closed; this would result in biases and misinterpretation of the data. In late-2008, the AERI mentors were able to figure out the problem with the hatch controller and resolve this issue. An algorithm was written to determine the hatch status from the observed spectrum. This algorithm was applied to all AERI spectra at the NSA site from Jan 2000 to August 2010; monthly netCDF files with the update flags are available as a PI product. Details of the method, and monthly distributions of the hatch condition, are in a report that is included with the data. The report demonstrates that the seasonal distribution of hatch open/closed conditions is much more uniform year-to-year, and much more realistic based upon the known seasonal dependence of precipitation at the NSA site. The data are available at http://iop.archive.arm.gov/arm-iop/0pi-data/turner/ |
