Subject: | SGP/SMOS/E15 - Reprocess: Wind speed calibrations |
DataStreams: | sgp1smosE15.a0, sgp30smosE15.a1 |
Description: | EDITOR'S NOTE: The earliest portion of the period of time covered by this DQR occurred prior to the begin date of regular ARM data. Those data are not readily available from the ARM Archive but are available by special request. The actual period of time covered by this DQR is 930401-930824.1530. Practically all of the information in this DQR is derived from P930723.1 and C930830.1, both of which were submitted by Dick Hart. The calibrations initially used for wind speeds on SMOS systems at Coldwater (E8), Ashton (E9), the central faciality (E13), Ringwood (E15), and Meeker (E20) were originally "generic"values, but analysis of the N.I.S.T traceable calibration data reveals that use of these "generic" calibrations produces data with insufficient accuracy. The calibrations for the wind speed sensor associated with the instrument must be used in the datalogger program in order to obtain data with a 1% uncertainty. For the worst case, one wind speed sensor underestimates the wind speed by 1.1 m/s at 30 m/s when the "generic" calibration is used. This is on top of the 1% calibration uncertainty. No unreported data loss occurred as a result of this calibration question, but users of the data should adjust the wind speed values before analysis involving these wind speed values. |

Subject: | SGP/TWR21x/C1 - Aspirator values affected by sudden T/RH changes |
DataStreams: | sgp1twr21xC1.a0, sgp30twr21xC1.a1 |
Description: | During 30 June and 02 July, 1994 a meteorological condition occurred that resulted in one minute and 30 minute aspirator values to be below acceptable levels. As has happened before, during times of rapid change in temperature and relative humidity (the former is mostly responsible) the aspirator value can fall below acceptable levels, even though there is no evidence in the T/RH data that aspirator flow has been reduced. However, under such rapid change conditions it is virtually impossible to tell if T or RH have been affected. I know from my past experience with the flow sensor in the aspirator unit that during rapid temperature decreases, the heater in the flow sensor cools off and does not respond rapidly enough to warm up to the acceptable temperature that would indicate proper flow. The flow sensor determines flow by sensing the temperature of the heater; if the temperature is within an acceptable range, which is calibrated to flow, the unit indicates proper flow. If the flow is too small (such as from a failed aspirator fan) or if the heater cools off from a rapid ambient temperature decrease, the flow sensor indicates an improper flow condition. The latter is the culprit during the specified times. There is a tremendous variation in raw output of the flow sensor as a result simply of very small fluctuations in aspirator flow; the flow sensor is a very sensitive device. Therefore, there are periods such as those below when aspirator flow will be indicated as incorrect, when the the aspirator is probably functioning properly and all other data values are correct. The affected aspirator values are (times are GMT): 1 minute 30 minute 30 June 1994 0221-0224 02 July 1994 0547-0551 0600-0630 0553-0555 0557-0558 0610-0611 0613-0616 0619 0621-0623 0628 |

Subject: | SGP/TWR21x/C1 - Temperature Offset |
DataStreams: | sgp1twr21xC1.a0, sgp30twr21xC1.a1 |
Description: | On May 11, 1994 the site operators at the Central Facility had some difficulty performing an ice bath check on the 60 meter Tower PRTD (platinum resistance temperature device). After consulting with the mentor (me) they reperformed the check and appeared to obtain good results (an output of 0.00 degrees C). However, this required a change in the calibration ratio. For the November 15, 1994 PRTD check I supplied a much more involved testing procedure than had been used previously. The ice bath check on that day indicated that at zero degrees C, the PRTD output was -1.37 degrees C. The calibration ratio was again adjusted, resulting in a ratio that is consistent with those determined in the checks previous to May 1994. The new ratio gave a temperature of -0.001 degrees C in the ice bath. The ratio used between May 11 and November 15, 1994 (at the times indicated above) was too small, leading to an underestimation of temperature. Because of the technique used in the Campbell Data Logger for the determination of temperature from a PRTD, the Nov. 15 initial ice bath reading of -1.37 degrees is essentially equivalent to an offset over the range of ambient air temperatures. I confirmed this by measuring a range of temperature (0 to 37 degrees C) with a 21X and a reference PRTD in our laboratory at ANL, simultaneously employing the two calibration ratios that we have used for the Tower PRTD after the past two calibration checks. Users of Central Facility Tower temperature data for the period listed above should add 1.37 degrees C to the data. Since vapor pressure is calculated from the Tower temperature (degrees C) and relative humidity (in %) measurements, vapor pressures for the period listed are too small by about 8% (the range is approximately 6% to 12%). Vapor pressure should be recalculated by the user with the following equations: CALCULATE VAPOR PRESSURE (IN KPA) FROM TEMPERATURE (T) AND RELATIVE HUMIDITY (RH) USING THE COEFFICIENTS C0 THROUGH C6 C0=6.107799961 C1=4.436518521E-01 C2=1.428945805E-02 C3=2.650648471E-04 C4=3.031240396E-06 C5=2.034080948E-08 C6=6.136820929E-11 VAPOR PRESSURE=RH*(C0+C1*T+C2*T*T+C3*T*T*T+C4*T*T*T*T+ C5*T*T*T*T*T+C6*T*T*T*T*T*T)/1000. Standard deviations of temperature and vapor pressure are probably very slightly underestimated, but the error in them cannot be quantified as we do not have the 1 second measurement data to recalculate them. Use with caution. |

Description: | There are two general conditions under which the Central Facility 60 meter tower aspirator data indicates as lower than acceptable, even though aspirator flow is acceptable and T/RH data are correct. I think that the explanations below should accompany all Tower T/RH/aspirator data that is distributed, perhaps in the metadata. I would appreciate it if the PRB would discuss this possibility. During April 14, 1995 the Central Facility experienced high winds (10 to 14 m/s at ground level), which resulted in one minute and 30 minute aspirator values being below acceptable levels. This is not the only condition that can cause the aspirator to falsely indicate insufficient air flow. As reported in a DQR on July 8, 1994, during times of rapid change in temperature and relative humidity (the former is mostly responsible) the aspirator value can fall below acceptable levels, even though there is no evidence in the T/RH data that aspirator flow has been reduced. During rapid temperature decreases, the heater in the flow sensor cools off and does not respond rapidly enough to warm up to the acceptable temperature that would indicate proper flow. The flow sensor determines flow by sensing the temperature of the heater; if the temperature is within an acceptable range, which is calibrated to flow, the unit indicates proper flow. If the flow is too small (such as from a failed aspirator fan) or if the heater cools off from a rapid ambient temperature decrease or enhanced ambient wind flow (which is the case in this DQR), the flow sensor indicates an improper flow condition. There is a tremendous variation in raw output of the flow sensor as a result of very small fluctuations in aspirator flow; the flow sensor is a very sensitive device (almost too sensitive). Therefore, there are periods when aspirator flow will be indicated as incorrect, even though the aspirator is probably functioning properly. Data values are correct in this situation, as they are for the data period listed above. |

Subject: | SGP/TWR21x/C1 - RH Probe Failure |
DataStreams: | sgp1twr21xC1.a0, sgp30twr21xC1.a1 |
Description: | Beginning early in June 1995, the relative humidity probe output began to drift upwards. A check of the probe on May 19, 1995 by site operations personnel indicated that it was reporting 3% higher than an aspirated psychron (an ANL instrument that indicates dry and wet bulb temperatures within 0.1 degree of each other when both are dry). 3% is within the combined accuracies of the sensors (3% for the RH probe, 2% for the psychron). Comparison of the RH probe output, SMOS output, and Sonde outputs indicates that the RH probe was outputting approximately 5% to 10% high by June 30. By August 15 it appeared to be near 10% to 15% high. On September 19, 1995 Chris Martin (of site operations) and I compared the RH probe with the HMI31 at 3 meters (tower carriages lowered). The RH probe indicated 100.9% whereas the HMI31 indicated 83%. Comparison of the HMI31 and the psychron indicated that the HMI31 reads 2% to 3% lower than the psychron. So the difference between the RH probe and the psychron would have been approximately 15.5%. Capacitive RH elements typically drift upwards at the rate of 1% to 2% each year. The difference between the psychron and the RH probe at the May 19 check was reasonable considering that it had been in use for more than two years. Previous checks (except for at the time of installation, when the two agreed within 1%) have indicated a somewhat larger difference (closer to 5%). The rapid drift of the tower RH probe is likely not a result of this aging process, but a more rapid deterioration that is attributed to an electronic malfunction, as has been seen on a couple of occasions in SMOS RH probes. At 1407 GMT on September 19 the tower carriages were lowered and checks and calibrations of the RH probe and PRTD were made. The RH probe was checked (as indicated above) and removed (S/N 231). A replacement probe (S/N 109) was installed and checked. The new probe indicated the same RH as the HMI31 and just less than 2% less than the psychron did. The tower carriages were returned to their proper positions at 1715 GMT. Comparison of the 60 meter RH (89%) and the surface RH (81% from the psychron) at that time was reasonable for the temperature difference of almost 2 degrees C. Tower vapor pressure (the correct temperature sensor calibration had been entered by that time) was 0.06 kPa less than that for the SMOS. This was reasonable for a cloudy, windy day. Correct RH data began after 1715 GMT. All 60 meter tower data is incorrect between 1407 GMT and 1715 GMT on September 19. Furthermore, all vapor pressure data between 1828 and 1845 GMT on September 18 is incorrect as a consequence of working on the 21X datalogger to find the cause of the 60 meter temperature problem. Because the tower temperature has been recording too low and the RH has been indicating too high, tower vapor pressures have not been greatly different than the actual ambient vapor pressure. Examination of the SMOS, tower, and Sonde data indicate that the tower vapor pressure was approximately 0.2 kPa too large in mid-June and 0.7 kPa too large by September 18. Correction of the tower RH record for the period of May 19 through September 18 may be difficult. It may be possible by careful comparison with the Sonde and SMOS records, but this would be time-consuming. Since the vapor pressure information from the tower is apparently within about 0.5 kPa of the correct values for most of the period, I indicated that the data is questionable. Following the information above, one can extrapolate to obtain an estimate of the 60 meter RH. |

Subject: | SGP/TWR21x/C1 - Teperature biased low |
DataStreams: | sgp1twr21xC1.a0, sgp30twr21xC1.a1 |
Description: | On June 14 through 17, 1995 the 60 meter temperature sensor output drifted low. On September 18, 1995 at 1828 GMT I observed the temperature to be 18.42 degrees C. At 1838 I discovered that the 100 ohm resistor connected to the CR21X was not making good contact. Once good contact was made, the temperature indicated 27.38 degrees C. The difference of nine degrees is consistent with the difference between the Sonde and tower (for similar temperature conditions) since June 17. The calibration of the sensor for that period is incorrect. It may be possible to determine a correction to the 60 meter temperature for that period from the imformation that I gathered while at the SGP CART Site on September 18 and 19; I will write an addendum to this DQR once I determine if this is possible. Temperature data for 1828 through 1845 GMT on September 18 is incorrect because I was fiddling with the CR21X connections during that period. On September 19 the 60 meter tower carriages were lowered for RH probe checks and replacement and for an ice bath calibration of the PRTD. All temperature data between 1407 GMT and 1715 GMT is incorrect for September 19 as a consequence of the carriages being down. An ambient air check of the PRTD indicated 22.7 degrees, with the HMI31 indicating 21.4 and the psychron (an ANL instrument that indicates dry and wet bulb temperatures within 0.1 degrees when both are dry) 21.6 degrees. The greater PRTD temperature was expected as the calibration ratio determined for the ice bath during the last calibration (May 19, 1995) was larger than expected. Apparently, poor contact of the 100 ohm resistor began at that point, although it worsened, probably from tower wind vibration, in mid June. The evidence at the time of the May 19 calibration seemed to be that the ratio was appropriate. I performed an ice bath check and ambient comparisons versus the HMI31 and psychron with the help of Chris Martin of site operations. As a result, the multiplier used in the CR21X was changed from 1.0141 to 1.0039. The latter is much more like previous correct determinations of 1.0053, 1.005, and 1.0032 (not in chronological order). Ambient checks with the carriage down then indicated 22.3 degrees for the PRTD, 22.4 for the psychron, and 22.0 for the HMI31. Correct Temperature, Relative Humidity, and Vapor Pressure data began after 1715 GMT on September 19, after the carriages returned to their proper positions. |

Description: | Since installation in September, the RH probe at the 60 meter level of the tower at the Central Facility has indicated more than 1% high for saturated conditions. Therefore, the 1% offset in the datalogger program was removed. The offset was included to make up for typical line voltage losses. Those losses may be present, but the offset of the RH probe itself more than makes up for them (the probe specifications would allow it to have a potential +/- 3% offset). The offset was removed on November 14, 1995 between 1440 and 1445 GMT, with no loss or corruption of data. The corrected offset should bring the RH at saturated conditions to within 1% of 100% and will result in more accurate measurements throughout the measurement range. Vapor pressure is correspondingly reduced slightly. |
