Subject: | SGP/QCRAD/E1 - Intermittently missing MFRSR data |
DataStreams: | sgpqcrad1longE1.c2 |
Description: | Chunks of MFRSR data are missing during 20050514 - 20050712. After maintenance was performed on 20050712 the 415, 500 and 940 nm channels are available, and while they look OK, they should be used with caution. MFRSR data may be missing or zero; some tests on best estimate global shortwave cannot be applied. BEGSW could be incorrect if MFRSR data used in tests or fits. See instrument DQR D050521.1 |

Subject: | SGP/QCRAD/E1 - Missing surface met data |
DataStreams: | sgpqcrad1longE1.c2 |
Description: | Surface meteorological data were missing during these time periods. Met data is used in a variety of quality control checks described below. Air temperature data is needed for tests on LW up and LW down pyrgeometer case and dome temperatures, and tests on the irradiances from upwelling LW/SW and downwelling LW. The Rayleigh limit diffuse radiation test is based on surface pressure. Most periods with missing data described in instrument DQRs: D991109.1, D080617.4, D080617.5 |

Subject: | SGP/QCRAD/E1 - Intermittently missing downwelling diffuse |
DataStreams: | sgpqcrad1longE1.c2 |
Description: | Starting on or about 10/26/2005 the downwelling diffuse hemispheric irradiance (Eppley 8-48) instrument had intermittent missing values. Technicians found a loose wire on the instrument connector and repaired it on 4/4/2006. This means that Best Estimate Global can't be calculated from the sum of direct and diffuse. It also means that some quality checks can't be done. Problem documented in instrument DQR D060331.2. |

Subject: | SGP/QCRAD/E1 - Tracker malfunction |
DataStreams: | sgpqcrad1longE1.c2 |
Description: | The solar tracker was inoperative during these time periods indicating that the shortwave direct normal, the shortwave diffuse, and possibly the downwelling longwave irradiance are inaccurate. This also impacts the best estimate value because the sum of direct and diffuse cannot be used, and some tests can't be applied to the data. DataStreams: | sgpqcrad1longE20.c2 |
Description: | On 1/15/2007 the E20 tracker failed due to weather. On 3/14 it was replaced but configured incorrectly (presumably the wrong lat/long). This wasn't discovered and corrected until 6/6/2007 1745GMT. All shortwave instruments dependent on proper tracker were affected. This includes measurements: downwelling shortwave diffuse and direct normal. Additionally, the global shortwave instrument have also been shaded during the second time range due to improperly set tracker. Discussed in instrument DQR D070927.1 |

Subject: | SGP/QCRAD/E2 - Tracker inoperative |
DataStreams: | sgpqcrad1longE2.c2 |
Description: | Solar tracker inoperative. Described in instrument DQR D970310.1. From about 97/02/20 to 97/03/06 (1500 GMT) the solar tracker was inoperative at site E2. We cannot pin down the exact starting time of this failure because of cloudy conditions around 97/02/20. The failure becomes obvious during clear skis at which time the NIP reads zero (i.e., it isn't pointed at the sun) and the downward diffuse radiation is too large (because the diffuse pyranometer is not being shaded). 97/03/03 was a particularly clear day and the diffuse pyranometer reads almost the same as the total downward pyranometer. The fact that they don't read exactly the same - the discrepency is about 75 W/m^2 at solar noon - is indicative of a large sensor calibration problem. This large calibration error is NOT typical of ARM data, rather it is peculiar to this site. |

Subject: | SGP/QCRAD/E21 - Reprocess: Incorrect PIR/UIR Calibration Coefficient |
DataStreams: | sgpqcrad1longE21.c2 |
Description: | Problem documented in instrument DQR D031009.2: Incorrect coefficients were applied to the upwelling longwave radiation measurement instrument (i.e. pyrgeometer, SIRS acroynm "UIR") during this time period. For a PIR mounted in an upwelling measurement orientation (UIR), the thermopile output is extremely low compared to a downwelling PIR (DIR). In addition, the UIR case and dome temperature differences are much smaller than a DIR. This results in the pyrgeometer receiver radiation term, Wr (NREL/Hickey equation) or Wc (Albrecht/Cox equation), dominating all other terms of the infrared radiant flux equation. Since the receiver radiation term uses coefficients in both forms of the pyrgeometer equations nearly equal to 1.0 +- <1% the result is a measurement of incoming longwave radiant flux relatively insensitive to the installed instrument - so long as it is an Eppley PIR. Evaluation of the problem data shows the expected error of the data (before correction) will be within 1% - less than the uncertainty of the instrument (Eppley PIR greater of 5% or 5 W/m2) To correct the one minute data found in the a1 or b1 datastream follow this procedure: 1) Obtain the following variables from the b1 datafile: inst_up_long_dome_temp inst_up_long_case_temp up_long_netir 2) For each one minute data entry in b1 tpUIR[uV] = up_long_netir[uV]/0.2523876[W/m2/uV] 3) Apply for each one minute data entry: WinUIR(W/m2)=k*V+ Sigma*Tc^4 -4*Sigma*(Td^4 - Tc^4) =[0.28902*tpUIR]+[Sigma*inst_up_long_case_temp^4] -[4*Sigma*(inst_up_long_dome_temp^4-inst_up_long_case^4)] where, Sigma = 5.6697E-8 (Stefan-Boltzman Const) Other datastream corrections that use the UIR measurements will require similar corrections. See the following web site for additional information on the pyrgeometer equations, specifically sections 2.1(Single Calibration Factor Approach) and 2.2 (Four Coefficient Calibration Approach) http://www.arm.gov/docs/instruments/static/pyrg.html |

Description: | Downwelling shortwave values were erratic during the day on 10/18 and in very poor agreement at times with downwelling shortwave values calculated from direct and diffuse measurements. Bi-weekly preventative maintenance records indicate bird poop was cleaned from the downwelling shortwave instrument on 10/29 at 16:30. Review of maintenance records and instrument data indicate no bird contamination since 10/29. Turkey vultures are the usual suspects in data quality problems at this facility. Subject: | SGP/QCRAD/C1 - Upwelling SW cable problem |
DataStreams: | sgpqcrad1longC1.c2 |
Description: | Starting 11/13/2006, the C1 SIRS Upwelling Shortwave (up_short_hemisp) started to show large differences in comparison to co-located E13 SIRS and C1 IRT25m. After much troubleshooting and gnashing of teeth it was discovered that rodents had chewed through the instrument cables at the bottom of the tilt tower. Cables were replaced 01/23/2007 1930GMT. Subject: | SGP/QCRAD/C1 - Sensor cable problem |
DataStreams: | sgpqcrad1longC1.c2 |
Description: | Beginning October 3, 2007, the upwelling longwave irradiance (up_long_hemisp, aka "UIR") started to spike to unreasonable values positively offset from the co-located E13 by over 100W/m2. On January 17 2008 the UIR values become consistently bad due to bad UIR dome thermistor wiring. Problem appears as a resistive offset in the dome thermistor but due to nature of failure (unknown cable problem) data correction would not yield any better data than the co-located E13 UIR instrument that is known to be operating correctly. Instrument cable replacement on 4/22 fixed the problem. Thermopile data (netIR) from this instrument is good. However, incoming irradiance data is not correctable due to bad UIR dome thermistor wiring within the instrument cable. Documented in instrument DQR D071022.4. |
