Automated methods for estimating PBLHs from radiosonde data may in some instances be identifying shallow stable layers over island surfaces as the PBLH. Insufficient data exists at this time to modify the automated algorithms to resolve this situation. Reported oceanic site PBLHs of <100 m, particularly at night, should be used with caution.
When reported VAP PBLHs are <100 m, users should manually compare radiosonde potential temperature vs. height diagrams with the four VAP estimates to determine if shallow stable layers exist.
