Subject: | TWP/MICROBASE/C3 - Incorrect detection of precipitation |
DataStreams: | twpmicrobasepi2C3.c1 |
Description: | Microbase uses the CloudBasePrecipitation field from twparscl1clothC3.c1 to determine the occurrence of precipitation. As noted in DQR D061220.35 for twparscl1clothC3.c1, the CloudBasePrecipitation is incorrect over this period due to a processing issue. As a result, the values in the Microbase aqc_precip field are incorrect. In addition, values of "14" to indicate precipitation in the Microbase aqc_liquid_water_content and aqc_liq_effective_radius fields are incorrect and should be ignored. Because we don't know when precipitation occurred, values of liquid_water_content and liq_effective_radius are suspect over this period. |
Suggestions: | Use the precip_mean field from the twpsmet60sC3.b1 to determine if precipitation occurred. If precipitation has not occurred the values of liquid_water_content and liq_effective-radius are good. Note: Use these met data with caution from 12/01/2005-3/31/2006 as there was a grounding issue with the optical rain gauge over this period. You may need to subtract a background value of up to 0.10 mm/hr from the precip_mean values. Please see DQR D060426.8 for more details on this issue.
