SGP/SIRS/E24 - Erratic downwelling shortwave data
DataStreams:sgpsirsE24.00, sgpsirsE24.b1, sgpsirs20sE24.a0
Description:
Downwelling shortwave hemispheric readings are occasionally erratic, jumping to very high
or very low values for short periods of time. SGP PM techs reseated all Downwelling
Shortwave PSP instrument connections on 3/17/2005 approx 1945GMT. The problem did not reoccur
after that time but the DS cable was replaced on 3/31/2005 approx 1815 GMT to ensure the
problem did not reappear.

SGP/SIRS/E24 - Dirt on dome
DataStreams:sgpsirsE24.00, sgpsirsE24.b1, sgpsirs20sE24.a0
Description:
The Downwelling Shortwave Hemispheric (DSH) Irradiance data were erratic. The Pyranometer
instrument dome at this site was likely dirty given the relatively large spread between
the measured DSH and derived DSH readings during the middle part of the day (up to 50
W/m^2). Rain on 04/06 most likely contributed to this problem. Preventative maintenance on
4/14 effectively cleaned the pyranometer dome. Preventative maintenance reports indicate
dry-water spots on dome when it was cleaned on 4/14.

DataStreams:sgpsirsE22.00, sgpsirsE22.b1, sgpsirs20sE22.a0
Description:
Upwelling longwave hemispheric data drops out occasionally during the afternoon hours.
Maintenance determined that the Upwelling LW Hemispheric irradiance instrument, the PIR,
had a failed cable affecting only the thermopile measurement of this instrument. Cable was
replaced 7/20/05 2000GMT.

SGP/SIRS/E20 - Downwelling Shortwave PSP Damaged by Lightning
DataStreams:sgpsirsE20.00, sgpsirsE20.b1, sgpsirs20sE20.a0
Description:
The PSP was damaged by a lightning strike on 8/04/05 (22:10 GMT). Data from other
radiometers are good after this event.

The PSP, NIP and shaded 8-48 were replaced 8/17/05 and the system returned to service at
18:40 GMT.

Downwelling Shortwave (DS) data from the unshaded PSP during this period is reported as
0.0 W/sq m. The DS can be computed from available Direct Normal (NIP), Downwelling Diffuse
(DD), and the computed Solar Zenith Angle (SZA) using the following equation:

    DS = NIP * Cos(SZA) + DD

Estimated uncertainties of the computed values are actually lower than those of the
measured DS (+/- 3% or 4% vs. +/- 5% to 10% respectively, depending on SZA).

Affected downwelling diffuse irradiance data can be corrected:

SGP/SIRS/E24 - Reprocess: Incorrect calibration coefficients
DataStreams:sgpsirsE24.00, sgpsirsE24.b1, sgpsirs20sE24.a0
Description:
During the PIR coefficient change from 4/coeffs to 1/coeff, the downwelling diffuse
hemispheric instrument (Eppley 8-48) coefficient was inadvertently changed to 122.85 and should
have been 112.85 W/m2/mV.

Perform the following calculation to correct the data, DD=downwelling diffuse instrument:

  DD(new)[W/m2]=( DD(old)[W/m2]/122.85[W/m2\mV] )* 112.85[W/m2/mV]

SGP/SIRS/E21 - Roosting birds in field of view
DataStreams:sgpsirsE21.00, sgpsirsE21.b1, sgpsirs20sE21.a0
Description:
The RBDD (Rotating Bird Deterrent Device) installed at E21 to prevent turkey vultures from
roosting on the instrument boom failed resulting in noisy NIP (Short Direct Normal) and
PSP (Short Global Hemispheric) data and a spike occurring around 2230 UTC everyday due to
obstruction of the field of view.

Problem is intermittant due to moving birds. Use data with discretion. Follow ARM
(DQMS3) flag recommendations for QC flags 02 or 03 found in section 5.1.4 of the SIRS handbook:

SGP/SIRS/E20 - Reprocessed: Longwave Calibration error
DataStreams:sgpsirsE20.b1
Description:
Modified pyrgeometer calibration procedures were implemented beginning in July 2003. These
modified procedures introduced a calibration bias in the longwave data. The previous
procedures were re-implemented at all sites between December 2005 and February 2006 to
restore proper calibrations.

The data collected while the incorrect procedures were in place have been reprocessed to
remove the calibration bias. The reprocessed 60 second averaged data are based on 3
instantaneous 20 second data records rather than on 60 1 second instantaneous data records.
Still, these data are considered far superior to the originally processed data. The
reprocessed data were archived in November 2006.
