Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E27 - incorrect tracking |
DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE27.a0, sgpsirsE27.00, sgpsirsE27.b1
|
Description: | The solar tracker at E27 was not functioning properly. The problem affected tracker
mounted instruments: downwelling diffuse 8-48 and direct normal pyrheliometer NIP.
After tracker adjustment on 4/14/2004 1700GMT the tracker stopped tracking properly during
afternoon hours. Attempts to correct tracker operation throughout the failure period
resulted in variations on incorrect tracker operation. No replacement tracker was available.
After adjustment on 9/15/2004 the tracker problem was resolved. It is unclear what, other
than typical az and zen tracker software changes by field techs, corrected the problem.
This problem period corresponds to the first time range specified (4/14 to 9/15).
On 10/27/2004 a replacement tracker was installed at E27. Technical difficulties kept
tracker out of service until 11/05/2004. The replacement tracker at E27 was put into serice
by the field techs on 11/05/2004 1830GMT. The tracker has been tracking correctly since
this time. This problem period corresponds to the second time range (10/27 to 11/05). |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E24 - NIP shaded near sunrise |
DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE24.a0, sgpsirsE24.b1
|
Description: | The NIP is shaded by the EF laptop computer enclosure near sunrise during parts of the
Spring and Summer. This has occurred from 04/08 to 05/20 and from 07/26 to 09/06 every year
since 2001 and will occur during these date ranges in the future as well. The shading
occurs for a few minutes each day between 1200 and 1300 GMT depending on the time of the
year. For the early dates, shading occurs a little after 1200 GMT and by 05/20 shading
happens nearer to 1300 GMT. In late July the shading occurs near 1300 GMT and closer to
1200 GMT by 09/06. |

Description: | After the DIR changeout on 8/27, the DLH measurements at the central facility vary
significantly between pyrgeometers by as much as 65 Wm^(-2). It was discovered that the two
downwelling pyrgeometers destined for C1 and E13 may have been swapped during installation.
The instrument mentor is unsure of applied calibration coefficients during this DQR's
time period. Backing out new downwelling longwave irradiances would be difficult in this
case. Fortunately, the problem period is less than a fortnight. |

Description: | During the night of 11/05-06 2004 the tracker failed at this location. During CM on 12/01,
power cycling returned the tracker to service. However, tracker was not properly
tracking in the AM. Tracker failed again sometime near 01/01/2005. CM on reloaded the tracker

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E9 - Unknown -failed PSP ventilator fan |
DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE9.a0, sgpsirsE9.00, sgpsirsE9.b1
|
Description: | Downwelling shortwave hemispheric (DSH) readings appear to have a slight to moderate
negative offset from derived DSH values. At night, this negative offset causes qc flags
(since values are below the minimum threshold of -10 W/m^2). Differences between derived and
actual DSH values are sometimes on the order of 50 W/m^2 due to this offset.
The offset was discovered to be due to a failed ventilator fan which is used to clear the
dome of the PSP, the instrument which measures the DSH. The ventilator likely seized or
was intermittent and heated the PSP base giving an erroneous DSH reading. Field techs
replaced the fan on 01/25/2005 1745GMT. The DSH has been reading normally since that time. |

Description: | Occasionally, the downwelling shortwave diffuse hemispheric (DSDH) readings spike to
unreasonably low levels, causing derived downwelling shortwave hemispheric (DSH) readings to
spike well below the actual DSH readings. Technicians repaired the DSDH instument (an
Eppley 8-48) cable on 02/08/2005 2055GMT. There have been no dropouts since that time. |

|
Description: | dominant problem here is the daytime 3 component problem. Direct and Diffuse are
always too high and Global is too low. The problem occurs around the time that the
testing regime switches from twilight to daytime testing regimes or from daytime to
twilight. The flags occur in significant numbers on the 1st - 5th, 8th - 20th, 24th -
28th,
30th, and 31st. The failures vary in magnitude and duration. The worst flags for a
particular
day is typically high level yellow, with respect to this problem. Global goes below
daytime empirical limits on both the 5th and 6th for substantial periods of time. Diffuse
also goes below daytime empirical limits on the 6th in the evening. Upwelling Longwave is
below empirical limits on the 24th. This may not be a problem, as many sites exhibited
the same problem on the same night. Exceptionally cold temperatures may be the cause.
Direct also exceeds its daytime empirical limit on the 1st, 4th, 10th, 13th, 14th, and
20th. This occurs
at the changeover from medium to high air mass and does not last for longer than 30
minutes. |
