Description: | Radiosondes manufactured at Vaisala's Woburn, MA factory during the first of January 1998 have incorrect serial numbers. Instead of being numbered 8012XXXXX these sondes are numbered 7012XXXXX. Vaisala has been informed of this, has confirmed the problem, and has corrected their numbering for all subsequent sondes. 163 incorrectly numbered sondes were shipped to ARM on 1/9/98. Some have been used at the CF since 1/19/98:1430. |

Subject: | SGP/SONDE - Incorrect surface pressure |
DataStreams: | sgpsondewrpnB1.00, sgpsondewrpnB1.a0, sgpsondewrpnB1.a1 |
Description: | The operator entered the THWAPS surface pressure (965.6) rather than the sonde surface pressure (963.8) into the sounding file. This will result in inaccurate ascent rates during the first 30 seconds of the sounding and inaccurate absolute altitudes throughout. |

Subject: | SGP/SONDE - Pressure jump at launch/incorrect surface values |
DataStreams: | sgpsondewrpnB1.00, sgpsondewrpnB1.a0, sgpsondewrpnB1.a1 |
Description: | There are two problems here. First, the operator entered the values of PTU obtained from the THWAPS as the surface values for this sounding instead of the sonde values. In doing so, the surface pressure was entered incorrected (OMIS log shows both sonde and THWAPS at 969.0), surface value is entered as 969.9. The second problem is that apparently the system misidentified the time of release and as a result the ascent rates are wrong for the first 30 seconds. The time of release problem was caused because the operator started a new sonde instead of resetting the system. I am assuming that the values of PTU are correct, but I have no way of knowing the relationship betweeen the time into the sounding and the actual altitude/pressures. It seems likely that the altitudes are OK but that they do not correspond to the actual times after phyical launch. |
