Description: | The data was missing over this time period because of a problem with the satellite - note discussion below Subject: URGENT! GOES-8 outage to continue From: jhawkins@nesdis.noaa.gov (Jamie Hawkins) Date: Thu, 9 Jan 1997 16:34:14 +0500 NOAA continues to analyze the GOES-8 problem, which now seems to be unrelated to an electrostatic discharge. Data now indicate that the attitude and orbit control computer (AOCE#2) is not receiving telemetry from one of two momentum wheels which keep the spacecraft facing the earth propoerly. A fix has been identified which will require using a back-up momentum wheel configuration known as L2. To begin L2 operations, NOAA will bring GOES-8 out of safe hold at approximately 5:00PM EST (22:00UTC) tomorrow, Friday January 10th. About two hours later, around 7:00 PM EST (00:00 UTC Saturday), imager and sounder GVAR data should begin flowing from the satellite. Operational products from NOAA for the National Weather Service should resume at that time. However, ALL USERS SHOULD NOTE that it may take 48 hours or longer for accurate navigation and registration to return to GOES-8 imagery. We will keep you informed of any chnages in this scheduled fix during the day Friday. Jamison Hawkins NOAA/NESDIS GOES Product Manager 301-457-5125 |

Subject: | Revision History of These Data Sets |
DataStreams: | sgpgoes8minnis-acfX1.c1, sgpgoes8minnisX1.c1 |
Description: | Below is the revision history of these data sets, generated by Patrick Minnis' group at NASA Langley: NASA Langley ARM October 1995 IOP Data File Revision History ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ARM Southern Great Plains (SGP) data: * The data were reprocessed on 22 April 1997. The visible calibration was updated using intercalibration with NOAA-14 AVHRR. The navigation and clear-sky albedos were slightly improved so that minor changes in clear and cloud properties may have occurred. A slightly different narrowband-broadband calibration based on a single equation derived from October 1986 ERBS and GOES-6 data was applied to compute shortwave albedos. These albedos were validated using ARM/UAV high-altitude broadband flux measurements from the Egrett. The LW fluxes were derived with an October 1986 GOES-6/ERBS correlation (no change). * The data were reprocessed with a new visible calibration on 14 January 1997. * The first official version of ARM SGP October 1995 IOP cloud product data was made available on 13 February 1996. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ARM Central Facility (CF) data: * The data were reprocessed on 22 April 1997. Please see the corresponding explanation for the SGP data above. * The data were reprocessed with a new visible calibration on 14 January 1997 * The first official version of ARM SGP October 1995 IOP cloud product data was made available on 13 February 1996. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- last modified on 10 June 1997. |

Description: | GOES images will be cancelled from August 11 to November 2 due to sun avoidance and seasonal eclipse operations. GOES-8 sun avoidance operations will begin on August 17. These operations may cause the loss of some GOES8 images during this time period but will not necessarily cause any losses. |

Description: | GOES-8 was commanded into safe hold mode at approximately 4 AM EST on Tuesday, October 27, in response to a large attitude disturbance. GOES-10 was placed into a full disk imaging mode beginning at approximately 8 AM (EST) October 28th to cover for the GOES-8 outage. Since the GOES8 data feeds the minnis products and the profiles derived by the University of Wisconsin (sgpg8profX1) these data are unavailable for the same time period that the GOES8 data are unavailable. We did receive GOES10 data for some of the period that we are missing GOES8. The GOES10 data are available for 981028 from 0100 to 1800(GMT), every half hour. We will be processing these files as a new data stream but there will be a delay until the ingest is modified to handle the GOES10. |
