DataStreams: | sgp1mwravgC1.c1, sgp5mwravgC1.c1, sgpmwrlosC1.a1, sgpmwrlosC1.b1 |
Description: | Several related and recurring problems with the SGP MWRs have been reported dating back to 1999. These problems were due to the occurrence of blackbody signals (in counts) that were half of those expected. The symptoms included noisy data (especially at Purcell), spikes in the data (especially at Vici), negative brightness temperatures, and apparent loss of serial communication between the computer and the radiometer, which results in a self-termination of the MWR program (especially at the CF). Because these all initially appeared to be hardware-related problems, the instrument mentor and SGP site operations personnel (1) repeatedly cleaned and replaced the fiber optic comm. components, (2) swapped radiometers, (3) sent radiometers back to Radiometrics for evaluation (which has not revealed any instrument problems), and (4) reconfigured the computer's operating system. Despite several attempts to isolate and correct it, the problem persisted. It became apparent that some component of the Windows98 configuration conflicted with the DOS-based MWR program or affected the serial port or the contents of the serial port buffer. This problem was finally corrected by upgrading the MWR software with a new Windows-compatible program. |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E21 - Reprocess: Incorrect PIR/UIR Calibration Coefficient |
DataStreams: | sgpsirsE21.00, sgpsirsE21.b1 |
Description: | Incorrect coefficients were applied to the upwelling longwave radiation measurement instrument (i.e. pyrgeometer, SIRS acroynm "UIR") during this time period. For a PIR mounted in an upwelling measurement orientation (UIR), the thermopile output is extremely low compared to a downwelling PIR (DIR). In addition, the UIR case and dome temperature differences are much smaller than a DIR. This results in the pyrgeometer receiver radiation term, Wr (NREL/Hickey equation) or Wc (Albrecht/Cox equation), dominating all other terms of the infrared radiant flux equation. Since the receiver radiation term uses coefficients in both forms of the pyrgeometer equations nearly equal to 1.0 +- <1% the result is a measurement of incoming longwave radiant flux relatively insensitive to the installed instrument - so long as it is an Eppley PIR. Evaluation of the problem data shows the expected error of the data (before correction) will be within 1% - less than the uncertainty of the instrument (Eppley PIR greater of 5% or 5 W/m2) To correct the one minute data found in the a1 or b1 datastream follow this procedure: 1) Obtain the following variables from the b1 datafile: inst_up_long_dome_temp inst_up_long_case_temp up_long_netir 2) For each one minute data entry in b1 tpUIR[uV] = up_long_netir[uV]/0.2523876[W/m2/uV] 3) Apply for each one minute data entry: WinUIR(W/m2)=k*V+ Sigma*Tc^4 -4*Sigma*(Td^4 - Tc^4) =[0.28902*tpUIR]+[Sigma*inst_up_long_case_temp^4] -[4*Sigma*(inst_up_long_dome_temp^4-inst_up_long_case^4)] where, Sigma = 5.6697E-8 (Stefan-Boltzman Const) Other datastream corrections that use the UIR measurements will require similar corrections. See the following web site for additional information on the pyrgeometer equations, specifically sections 2.1(Single Calibration Factor Approach) and 2.2 (Four Coefficient Calibration Approach) http://www.arm.gov/docs/instruments/static/pyrg.html |

DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE18.a0, sgpsirsE18.00, sgpsirsE18.b1 |
Description: | Upwelling longwave data was somewhat noisy during this period. There was a direct relation to the case and dome thermistor measurements for the upwelling longwave PIR (UIR). Data quality does not appear to be greatly affected overall, though instantaneous values had greater than usual variability. The noise disappeared on 10/19. |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/C1 - Discrepancy between measured and derived downwelling shortwave hemispheric |
DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sC1.a0, sgpsirsC1.b1 |
Description: | Measured values of downwelling hemispheric shortwave radiation were up to 40 W/m^2 higher than derived values during the afternoon hours. Analysis reveals that this is likely an artifact of the cosine response of the particular installed PSP coupled with typical uncertainties of this set of installed radiometers. That is, this particular instrument cluster seems to be producing cumulative errors on the high side of accepted values. The PSP contains the most uncertainty in measurement at this station. Users should use a derived value for the downwelling shortwave hemispheric irradiance (DS). Where DS = diffuse component + direct normal * cos(SZA) component described in the SIRS handbook Sec 7.2 available at: http://www.arm.gov/publications/tech_reports/handbooks/sirs_handbook.pdf |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E27 - incorrect tracking |
DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE27.a0, sgpsirsE27.00, sgpsirsE27.b1 |
Description: | The solar tracker at E27 was not functioning properly. The problem affected tracker mounted instruments: downwelling diffuse 8-48 and direct normal pyrheliometer NIP. After tracker adjustment on 4/14/2004 1700GMT the tracker stopped tracking properly during afternoon hours. Attempts to correct tracker operation throughout the failure period resulted in variations on incorrect tracker operation. No replacement tracker was available. After adjustment on 9/15/2004 the tracker problem was resolved. It is unclear what, other than typical az and zen tracker software changes by field techs, corrected the problem. This problem period corresponds to the first time range specified (4/14 to 9/15). On 10/27/2004 a replacement tracker was installed at E27. Technical difficulties kept tracker out of service until 11/05/2004. The replacement tracker at E27 was put into serice by the field techs on 11/05/2004 1830GMT. The tracker has been tracking correctly since this time. This problem period corresponds to the second time range (10/27 to 11/05). |

Subject: | NSA/SKYRAD/C1 - itermittant IRT bias |
DataStreams: | nsaskyrad60sC1.b1 |
Description: | A problem with the SKYRAD IRT that itermittantly produced a gradual increase in the sky temperature measurement then a sudden correction, as compared to AERI, appears to have been caused by a combination of a failing IR detector, a poor signal cable, a contaminated (with condensation or frost) mirror or lens, and low ambient temperatures. The positive bias was apparently not consistant in either frequency or duration but on days when the unusual behavior is observed, it usually occurred from about 00:00 to 06:00 local time. The instrument was repaired and recalibrated and the signal cable replaced. |

Description: | IN THE BEGINNING (June 1992), the retrieval coefficients used to derive the precipitable water vapor (PWV) and liquid water path (LWP) from the MWR brightness temperatures were based on the Liebe and Layton (1987) water vapor and oxygen absorption model and the Grant (1957) liquid water absorption model. Following the SHEBA experience, revised retrievals based on the more recent Rosenkranz (1998) water vapor and oxygen absorption models and the Liebe (1991) liquid waer absorption model were developed. The Rosenkranz water vapor absorption model resulted a 2 percent increase in PWV relative to the earlier Liebe and Layton model. The Liebe liquid water absorption model decreased the LWP by 10% relative to the Grant model. However, the increased oxygen absorption caused a 0.02-0.03 mm (20-30 g/m2) reduction in LWP, which was particularly significant for low LWP conditions (i.e. thin clouds encountered at SHEBA). Recently, it has been shown (Liljegren, Boukabara, Cady-Pereira, and Clough, TGARS v. 43, pp 1102-1108, 2005) that the half-width of the 22 GHz water vapor line from the HITRAN compilation, which is 5 percent smaller than the Liebe and Dillon (1969) half-width used in Rosenkranz (1998), provided a better fit to the microwave brightness temperature measurements at 5 frequencies in the range 22-30 GHz, and yielded more accurate retrievals. Accordingly, revised MWR retrieval coefficients have been developed using MONORTM, which utilizes the HITRAN compilation for its spectroscopic parameters. These new retrievals provide 3 percent less PWV and 2.6 percent greater LWP than the previous retrievals based on Rosenkranz (1998). Although the MWR data will be reprocessed to apply the new monortm-based retrievals, for most purposes it will be sufficient to correct the data using the following factors: PWV_MONORTM = 0.9695 * PWV_ROSENKRANZ LWP_MONORTM = 1.026 * LWP_ROSENKRANZ The Rosenkranz-based retrieval coefficients became active as follows (BCR 456): SGP/C1 (Lamont) 4/16/2002, 2000 SGP/B1 (Hillsboro) 4/12/2002, 1600 SGP/B4 (Vici) 4/15/2002, 2300 SGP/B5 (Morris) 4/15/2002, 2300 SGP/B6 (Purcell) 4/16/2002, 2200 SGP/E14(Lamont) 4/16/2002, 0000 NSA/C1 (Barrow) 4/25/2002, 1900 NSA/C2 (Atqasuk) 4/18/2002, 1700 TWP/C1 (Manus) 5/04/2002, 0200 TWP/C2 (Nauru) 4/27/2002, 0600 TWP/C3 (Darwin) inception The MONORTM-based retrieval coefficients became active as follows (BCR 984): SGP/C1 (Lamont) 6/28/2005, 2300 SGP/B1 (Hillsboro) 6/24/2005, 2100 SGP/B4 (Vici) 6/24/2005, 2100 SGP/B5 (Morris) 6/24/2005, 2100 SGP/B6 (Purcell) 6/24/2005, 1942 SGP/E14(Lamont) 6/28/2005, 2300 NSA/C1 (Barrow) 6/29/2005, 0000 NSA/C2 (Atqasuk) 6/29/2005, 0000 TWP/C1 (Manus) 6/30/2005, 2100 TWP/C2 (Nauru) 6/30/2005, 2100 TWP/C3 (Darwin) 6/30/2005, 2100 PYE/M1 (Pt. Reyes) 4/08/2005, 1900** ** At Pt. Reyes, the original retrieval coefficients implemented in March 2005 were based on a version of the Rosenkranz model that had been modified to use the HITRAN half-width at 22 GHz and to be consistent with the water vapor continuum in MONORTM. These retrievals yield nearly identical results to the MONORTM retrievals. Therefore the Pt. Reyes data prior to 4/08/2005 may not require reprocessing. |

DataStreams: | sgpsirsE19.b1 |
Description: | Modified pyrgeometer calibration procedures were implemented beginning in July 2003. These modified procedures introduced a calibration bias in the longwave data. The previous procedures were re-implemented at all sites between December 2005 and February 2006 to restore proper calibrations. The data collected while the incorrect procedures were in place have been reprocessed to remove the calibration bias. The reprocessed 60 second averaged data are based on 3 instantaneous 20 second data records rather than on 60 1 second instantaneous data records. Still, these data are considered far superior to the originally processed data. The reprocessed data were archived in October 2006. |

Description: | The mirror/shadowband was not turning and there was no communication with the control board. The shadowband was stuck in the position of 0 degrees from 8/29 to 9/20/2006. On 10/12/2006, the mirror was replaced, the real-time clock chip was removed and heat sinks were added to the control board, and the Ethernet hub and serial adaptor were replaced. On 1/8/2007, the slip clutch assembly, timing pulley, and timing belt were replaced (which were damaged when the mirror was replaced). These actions did not correct the problem. The instrument was swapped with the unit from Darwin so that the control board could be repaired and tested in Darwin. Several images were collected in the iterim that should be ignored. These images include periods when the sun was not masked by the shadowband or the camera lens was covered by tape to protect the CCD from direct exposure to the sun. There are also extended periods of missing data when the instrument was shutdown, waiting for parts. |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E19 - Reprocess: Incorrect calibration coefficients |
DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE19.a0, sgpsirsE19.b1 |
Description: | Sometime on 10/13 the SIRS datalogger reverted to the old program used for the previous set of coefficients (i.e. before the scheduled 9/13 shortwave instrument swapout). Coefficients were such that the program change didn't result in easily discernable changes in the data. The longwave instruments were not affected. The Coefficients applied during this time were as follows (marked "Incorrect"): Incorrect "Diffuse PSP: 106.83 W/(m^2*mV)\n", Correct "Diffuse PSP: 113.35 W/(m^2*mV)\n", Incorrect "PSP-US: 119.40 W/(m^2*mV)\n", Correct "PSP-US: 117.97 W/(m^2*mV)\n", Incorrect "NIP: 120.41 W/(m^2*mV)\n", Correct "NIP: 121.72 W/(m^2*mV)\n", Incorrect "PSP-DS: 120.26 W/(m^2*mV)\n", Correct "PSP-DS: 122.52 W/(m^2*mV)\n", Shortwave data can be corrected by dividing by "Incorrect" coefficient and multiplying "Correct" coefficient. (e.g. down_short_diffuse_hemisp(cor) = down_short_diffuse_hemisp*(113.35/106.83)) |

Subject: | NSA/SKYRAD/C1 - IRT mirror heater failure |
DataStreams: | nsaskyrad20sC1.a0, nsaskyrad60sC1.b1 |
Description: | The heater of the IRT gold mirror failed due to a broken wire (that probably occurred on 12/13 during maintenance of the solar tracker) allowing snow and frost to accumulate on the mirror until it was cleared during daily preventative maintenance. The problem was corrected when the heater wires were replaced. |

DataStreams: | nsatsiskycoverX1.b1 |
Description: | The software used to collect images from the TSI deployed at the NOAA/CMDL station was configured with the NSA/C1 latitude & longitude of 71? 19.38' N, 156? 36.93' W. The longitude should have been 156? 36.68' W. The effect on the shadowband position was minimal. |

Subject: | SGP/MWR/C1 - Valid LWP > 1mm excluded from 5 min avgs |
DataStreams: | sgp5mwravgC1.c1 |
Description: | The limit of maximum valid liquid water path was set at 1 mm. Although this limit was selected 'conservatively' so as to definitely flag precipitation-contaminated data in the 20-second (sgpmwrlos) files, the effect has been to exclude valid liquid water paths greater than 1 mm from the 5-minute averages (sgp5mwravg). The maximum limits for precipitable water vapor (PWV) and liquid water path (LWP) have been removed, and the averaging algorithm instead excludes data on the basis of the brightness temperature flags. These flags are set below a minimum of 2.75 K (cosmic background) and above a maximum of 100 K (precipitation). |
