Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E5 - Downwelling direct normal (NIP) reporting low |
DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE5.a0, sgpsirsE5.00, sgpsirsE5.b1 |
Description: | There were large differences between the measured downwelling shortwave (DS) and the downwelling shortwave calculated from direct (NIP) and diffuse (DD) readings. It appears that the direct normal shortwave readings were much too low, particularly on 7/14 and 7/15. It appears that the diffuse instrument was being shaded properly, but the NIP was not tracking the sun. The problem was corrected during the preventative maintenance visit on 7/16/03 at 1840GMT. The technician reported doing the quarterly connection corrosion checks and ventilator fan cleaning, the NIP was described as having "dry-light dust" on the window, no mention of tracker alignment was made. Although uncertain, a bad connection at some point in the instrument wiring was likely to blame and was eliminated during the corrosion inspection process. |

DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE2.a0, sgpsirsE2.00, sgpsirsE2.b1 |
Description: | Measured downwelling shortwave data was very questionable, reporting nighttime values as low as -50 W/m^2, while differing from calculated downwelling shortwave by as much as 50 W/m^2 lower during the day. The first indication of a problem was around 10 UTC, 9/14, when measured DS values suddenly dropped below 10 W/m^2 for about a 2 hour period before sunrise, then were consistently lower than calculated DS by as much as 40 W/m^2 during the day. The problem got progressively worse with time until the ventilator fan was replace on 9/25. Ventilator fan failure changed the fundamental operating characteristics of this PSP and resulted in unpredictable biased measurements which cannot be corrected without additional empirical characterization of the radiometer in question. |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E21 - Reprocess: Incorrect PIR/UIR Calibration Coefficient |
DataStreams: | sgpsirsE21.00, sgpsirsE21.b1 |
Description: | Incorrect coefficients were applied to the upwelling longwave radiation measurement instrument (i.e. pyrgeometer, SIRS acroynm "UIR") during this time period. For a PIR mounted in an upwelling measurement orientation (UIR), the thermopile output is extremely low compared to a downwelling PIR (DIR). In addition, the UIR case and dome temperature differences are much smaller than a DIR. This results in the pyrgeometer receiver radiation term, Wr (NREL/Hickey equation) or Wc (Albrecht/Cox equation), dominating all other terms of the infrared radiant flux equation. Since the receiver radiation term uses coefficients in both forms of the pyrgeometer equations nearly equal to 1.0 +- <1% the result is a measurement of incoming longwave radiant flux relatively insensitive to the installed instrument - so long as it is an Eppley PIR. Evaluation of the problem data shows the expected error of the data (before correction) will be within 1% - less than the uncertainty of the instrument (Eppley PIR greater of 5% or 5 W/m2) To correct the one minute data found in the a1 or b1 datastream follow this procedure: 1) Obtain the following variables from the b1 datafile: inst_up_long_dome_temp inst_up_long_case_temp up_long_netir 2) For each one minute data entry in b1 tpUIR[uV] = up_long_netir[uV]/0.2523876[W/m2/uV] 3) Apply for each one minute data entry: WinUIR(W/m2)=k*V+ Sigma*Tc^4 -4*Sigma*(Td^4 - Tc^4) =[0.28902*tpUIR]+[Sigma*inst_up_long_case_temp^4] -[4*Sigma*(inst_up_long_dome_temp^4-inst_up_long_case^4)] where, Sigma = 5.6697E-8 (Stefan-Boltzman Const) Other datastream corrections that use the UIR measurements will require similar corrections. DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE9.a0, sgpsirsE9.00, sgpsirsE9.b1 |
Description: | Downwelling shortwave values were too low, dropping below -10 W/m^2 at night and reading 30-50 W/m^2 lower than DS calculated from direct and diffuse measurements during the day. This problem became more noticeable beginning on 10/14, when nighttime values began to drop below -10 W/m^2 consistently. The problem was corrected with the annual instrument changout on 10/23/03. Although the downwelling shortwave instrument (DS) appears to be the problem a more likely scenario is that the cable connections became thermopile. The instrument changeout possibly reseated and corrected any poor connections. |

The difference is on the order of 200 Wm^(-2) at E2 and to a lesser extent at the other affected stations. This problem most likely resulted from a previous day or night snow/ice accumulation on the Direct(NIP), Downwelling Sortwave(PSP) and/or Downwelling Diffuse(8-48) instruments. During the morning hours of 02/02, Approx 1300-2000GMT, snow/ice was covering one or more of these three instruments resulting in faulty readings and incorrect derived downwelling shortwave values as well. Instrument readings indicate the problem resolved itself later in the day through normal meltoff. |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E9 - PSP dome contamination |
DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE9.a0, sgpsirsE9.00, sgpsirsE9.b1 |
Description: | Measured values of diffuse shortwave downwelling radiation fluctuated below derived values of downwelling shortwave radiation by 50 W/m^2 during the afternoon hours under clear conditions. SMOS precipitation and wind speed data reveals rain and wind the night before on 02/20/03 0100 GMT probably contaminated the PSP dome with dirt. Precipitation of .25mm on 02/23/04 0300 seems to have effectively cleared the PSP dome since PSP data on 02/24/04 compares correctly to direct and diffuse components. |

Description: | Downwelling hemispheric shortwave values drop at about 1500 GMT under clear sky conditions, typically from about 14:00GMT to 16:00GMT. This may be due to a dirty PSP but maintenance on 03/23/04 18:11 GMT revealed no more than typical light dust. The problem was essentially undetectable by 03/31/04 12:00. The time of day that the problem exists appears to be an exagerated PSP cosine response. No obvious reason presents why the problem appeared and then disappeared within this two week period. |

DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE21.a0, sgpsirsE21.00, sgpsirsE21.b1 |
Description: | Values of diffuse hemispheric shortwave radiation differ from derived values by at most 70 Wm^(-2). The incident appears to be isolated to 3/21, 3/22, and 3/23. An estimation of solar noon using downwelling shortwave hemispheric irradiance from the PSP shows solar noon to oocur at around 1845GMT on 3/21. Calculated solar noon occurs at E21 at 1831GMT for 3/21/2004. There appears to be a time discrepancy in the datalogger for these dates. 04/01 is the next date with enough sun to determine solar noon and compare to calculated. The data from this date appears correct. Ronald Reed [rreed@ops.sgp.arm.gov] reports the logger did not receive any reportable time updates during the late March time period. We don't know what happened during these three dates but from 3/24 on data looks acceptable. |

Description: | The solar tracker at E27 was not functioning properly. The problem affected tracker mounted instruments: downwelling diffuse 8-48 and direct normal pyrheliometer NIP. After tracker adjustment on 4/14/2004 1700GMT the tracker stopped tracking properly during afternoon hours. Attempts to correct tracker operation throughout the failure period resulted in variations on incorrect tracker operation. No replacement tracker was available. After adjustment on 9/15/2004 the tracker problem was resolved. It is unclear what, other than typical az and zen tracker software changes by field techs, corrected the problem. This problem period corresponds to the first time range specified (4/14 to 9/15). On 10/27/2004 a replacement tracker was installed at E27. Technical difficulties kept tracker out of service until 11/05/2004. The replacement tracker at E27 was put into serice by the field techs on 11/05/2004 1830GMT. The tracker has been tracking correctly since this time. This problem period corresponds to the second time range (10/27 to 11/05). |

Description: | After the DIR changeout on 8/27, the DLH measurements at the central facility vary significantly between pyrgeometers by as much as 65 Wm^(-2). It was discovered that the two downwelling pyrgeometers destined for C1 and E13 may have been swapped during installation. The instrument mentor is unsure of applied calibration coefficients during this DQR's time period. Backing out new downwelling longwave irradiances would be difficult in this case. Fortunately, the problem period is less than a fortnight. |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E9 - Unknown -failed PSP ventilator fan |
DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE9.a0, sgpsirsE9.00, sgpsirsE9.b1 |
Description: | Downwelling shortwave hemispheric (DSH) readings appear to have a slight to moderate negative offset from derived DSH values. At night, this negative offset causes qc flags (since values are below the minimum threshold of -10 W/m^2). Differences between derived and actual DSH values are sometimes on the order of 50 W/m^2 due to this offset. The offset was discovered to be due to a failed ventilator fan which is used to clear the dome of the PSP, the instrument which measures the DSH. The ventilator likely seized or was intermittent and heated the PSP base giving an erroneous DSH reading. Field techs replaced the fan on 01/25/2005 1745GMT. The DSH has been reading normally since that time. |

Description: | Several SIRS readings at E6 readings have appeared questionable since the ice storm in early January. Starting on 01/13 maintenance found the E6 tracker inoperative. It was reset and put back into serivice. Shortly after, on 01/16 data from the DSH instrument (PSP) became questionable possibly due to obstructed or failed ventilator fan. On 02/10 1645 GMT maintenance found the DSH instrument ventilator fan failed - the fan was replaced, the E6 tracker was also realigned. Due to early january ice storms, the tracker alignment issues and a failed ventilator fan - All tracker mounted and global DS instrument measurements are suspect for this time frame. |

DataStreams: | sgpsirsE13.b1 |
Description: | :Data quality this site-month is good. The offset for the Global PSP is about -7 W/m^2. The dominant problem here is the daytime 3 component problem. Direct and Diffuse are always too high and Global is too low. The problem occurs around the time that the testing regime switches from twilight to daytime testing regimes or from daytime to twilight. The flags occur in significant numbers on the 1st - 5th, 7th - 20th, 24th - 28th, 30th, and 31st. The failures vary in magnitude and duration. The worst flags for a particular respect to this problem. Global goes below daytime empirical limits on both the 5th and 6th for substantial periods of time. Diffuse also goes below daytime empirical limits on the 6th in the afternoon. Upwelling Longwave is below empirical limits on the 24th. This may not be a problem, as many sites exhibited the same problem on the same night. Exceptionally cold temperatures may be the cause. |

DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE1.a0, sgpsirsE1.00, sgpsirsE1.b1 |
Description: | Starting on or about 10/26/2005 the downwelling diffuse hemispheric irradiance (Eppley 8-48) instrument had intermittant missing values. Technicians found a loose wire on the instrument connector and repaired it on 4/4/2006. Use global shortwave hemispheric (PSP) component - normal incident component (CosZA*NIP) to calulate diffuse component. Comparison of absolute difference between actual and computed diffuse component values and diffuse standard deviations > 1-2 W/m2 can help filter the noisy diffuse data. There is no standard method. |

DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE16.a0, sgpsirsE16.b1 |
Description: | The short_direct_normal dropped below MIN value on 4/28/06 resulting in failure of the up_long_hemisp started 3-component test. No data are available from 20060428.1900 through 20060503.21:39. When the data returned, the short_direct normal fluctuated wildly throughout the day, and down_long_hemisp & up_long_hemisp failed the 3-component test. Technicians determined the NIP had failed and replaced it 5/12. Use component method ((global - diffuse)/cos(ZA)) to calculate direct normal. For more information on this summation method please see section 7.2 (Theory of Operation) of the SIRS Handbook: http://www.arm.gov/publications/tech_reports/handbooks/sirs_handbook.pdf |

Description: | Modified pyrgeometer calibration procedures were implemented beginning in February 2004. These modified procedures introduced a calibration bias in the longwave data. The previous procedures were re-implemented at all sites between December 2005 and February 2006 to restore proper calibrations. The data collected while the incorrect procedures were in place have been reprocessed to remove the calibration bias. The reprocessed 60 second averaged data are based on 3 instantaneous 20 second data records rather than on 60 1 second instanteous data records. Still, these data are considered far superior to the originally processed data. The reprocessed data were archived in September 2006. |

The reprocessed 60 second averaged data are based on 3 instantaneous 20 second data records rather than on 60 1 second instantaneous data records. Still, these data are considered far superior to the originally processed data. The reprocessed data were archived in October 2006. |

Description: | No data were collected from 6/7/2006 0000 to 6/14/2006 1612 due to hardware problems. When data resumed on 6/14, ALL calibration coefficients and serial numbers were for different instruments possibly due to incorrect program loaded on storage module. Correct program reloaded by PM/CM techs on 7/12 1830GMT Shortwave data can be corrected with a simple multiplier as shown below. Longwave data must be reprocessed from temperature and netIR data. The data can be recalibrated as follows: First divide value by incorrectly applied cal coeff (first number) then multiply by correct cal coeff (second number). down_short_diffuse_hemisp 109.52 110.31 up_short_hemisp 111.61 109.80 short_direct_normal 115.73 118.82 down_short_hemisp 122.47 117.34 up_long_netir 0.26525 0.2564 down_long_netir 0.27173 0.2695 Reapply cal coeffs below using up_long_netIR(uV), inst_up_long_dome_temp(K), inst_up_long_dome_temp(K) using procedure described in SIRS instrument manual. up_long_hemisp k0 0.00 W/m^2 k1 0.2564 W/(m^2*uV) k2 1.00 unitless k3 -4.00 unitless kr 0.000 K/uV Reapply cal coeffs below using down_long_netIR(uV),inst_down_long_dome_temp (K),inst_down_long_dome_temp(K). down_long_hemisp_shaded k0 0.00 W/m^2 k1 0.2695 W/(m^2*uV) k2 1.00 unitless k3 -4.00 unitless kr 0.000 K/uV |

Description: | Ice storms affected the SGP central and extended facilities starting Dec 10 0000GMT to mid/late December. Each facility was affected at various times and degrees dependant on elevation, latitude and whether power failed for short or extended periods of time. By December 15th most ice had melted from the radiometers at all the faclities but power outages and tracker failures persisted at some stations. |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/E4 - UPS failure |
DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE4.a0, sgpsirsE4.b1 |
Description: | On Jan 13th approximately 1400GMT the UPS failed at E4. This affected both the global and tracker mounted instruments. The affected measurements are down_short_hemisp(PSP), down_short_diffuse(8-48) and direct_normal(NIP) measurements. The PSP down_short_hemisp measurement doesn't rely on the tracker but is power ventilated and is adversely affected by daytime solar heating when the ventilator power fails. |

DataStreams: | sgpsirs20sE5.a0, sgpsirsE5.00, sgpsirsE5.b1 |
Description: | When instruments were changed out on 6/25 the UIR (up_long_hemisp measurement) S/N and cal coefficient reverted to a previous UIR instrument that was damaged and removed on 12/28/2007. The UIR S/N should be 31637F3 with corresponding cal K=.2526 instead of applied value of K=.2571. However, for the PIR longwave instrument in this inverted position (UIR) the K1 term contributes approximately 0-7% of the total upwelling longwave signal throughout the day, or about 0-30 W/m2. The cal coefficient is too high by approximately 2%. Thus, the UIR data, as is, ranges from 0 to .6 W/m2 too low since this term is always negative. The uncertainty of this instrument is approximately +-10 W/m2 with respect to the WSIG. Reprocessing is not recommended. |
