Description: | The measurement leaf_ind (leaf wetness index, measurement of dew ranging from 0 (dry) to 100(wet)) should not be used since Mark Shafer of Oklahoma Mesonet reports that the sensors never worked properly. The new quality assured Oklahoma Mesonet data files sgp15okmX1.b1 will begin with the January 1, 1999 data and will no longer contain this measurement. |

Subject: | Overview of Automated QA - April 1997 |
DataStreams: | sgp05okmX1.a1, sgp15okmX1.a1 |
Description: | Following is an overview of the April 1997 Oklahoma Mesonet Automated Quality Assurance Data Files From Mark Shafer, Oklahoma Mesonet The April report from the QA manager is attached here. The only thing I would add is that WEBB RELH and SALL TAIR and RELH appeared to have some problems not documented. The indiviudal data have flags which reflect problems, but I would be cautious with RELH data for these two sites. _________________________________________________________________________ OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of April, 1997 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Jeff Basara (jbasara@ou.edu) ================================================================================ Notes: As the weather warms up, it seems the Mesonet has also. The technicians have had plenty of things to keep them busy, and many trouble tickets were issued and resolved in April. With the onset of the spring rains, more rain guages have shown up plugged or stopped. This has proven to be the most problematic instrument during the month of April, but even so, the guages have been working rather well so far. There was only one incident of vandalism this month, and it was at WEBB again. Someone decided they needed a 10m wind monitor to add to their collection, so they came back and grabbed one. One note of weather related interest involves the monthly summary of wind vectors. With a number of surface low pressure systems slowly marching through Texas in April, the 1800 UTC wind vectors were almost due easterly is southern Oklahoma for the month. Rather interesting! Well, here is the rap sheet... ================================================================================ TAIR (Air Temperature at 1.5 meters): Current t-tkts: None. Added: None. OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of May, 1997 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Jeff Basara (jbasara@ou.edu) ================================================================================ Notes: It was generally a pleasant month for the Mesonet. The only major incidents which occurred in May was a lightning stike at BLAC, which damaged a few sensors, and the 10m wind monitor was stolen from WEBB. Yes, somebody actually climbed the tower in the dark just to steal the 10m wind monitor. The ARS Micronet is running smoothly, and work has begun to switch out all of the weighing bucket rain guages to tipping bucket rain guages. One note in this report invloves the "added" section for ARS t-tkts. As of yet, the monthly summaries have not been completed. OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of June, 1997 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Jeff Basara (jbasara@ou.edu) ================================================================================ Notes: The Oklahoma Mesonet experienced a quite month for the first time in a while, and there are no major incidents to report. On the other hand, summer arrived in all it's glory during the month and can easily be seen in the averaged summaries with warm temps, high dew points, and general southerly flow. Besides a gopher here, a possible lightning strike there, and a few batteries stolen from sites, it was an uneventful month. In the great rain giveaway during the month, BLAC was the overall winner coming in with over 12 inches of rain, while NEWK was second at over 10 inches. This time CLAR took the honors of having the highest total with over 10 inches followed by WYNO which had over 9 inches. Conversely, 14 sites in southern Oklahoma had less than 2.5 inches of rainfall. To put this in perspective, all of the Panhandle sites had more rainfall than those 14 sites in southern Oklahoma. Jerry Brotzge will soon be taking over the responsibilities of Quality Assurance Manager. DataStreams: | sgp05okmX1.a1, sgp15okmX1.a1 |
Description: | Below is an overview from Mark Shafer of the automated quality assurance results for the September 1997 Oklahoma Mesonet data. 1. WEBB RELH was flagged as suspect (badparm) from 09/26 - 10/07, but it failed the range check on several other occasions - 09/06, 09/11, and 09/12. I suggest that anyone using the data from the 6th onward should be cautious, but the flags in the QA files are reliable. 2. HUGO PRES first started showing up with suspect and warning flags on the 20th, but was not flagged in badparm until the 30th (as 2 = warning). It was previously flagged in badparm as suspect from 08/28 to 09/11, but the flag was cleared on the 11th. Because of the intermittent nature of the problem, I advise not using HUGO PRES at all during september. 3. WYNO PRES went bad on the 20th and was properly flagged (immediately) in badparm, but it still influenced estimates for nearby stations (BIXB, BRIS, BURB, CLAR, COPA, FORA, NEWK, NOWA, OILT, PAWN, REDR, SKIA). None of these stations should have any flags on PRES from the 20th onward, and anyone using our data should be advised that any such flags (other than WYNO and HUGO) are erroneous. Any flags on PRES prior to the 20th are believed to be accurate. We have isolated the bug in the software which allowed the readings at WYNO to influence the other stations, and have planned ways to eliminate the problem, but we are in the midst of porting the QA code to C, and I do not want to make changes until that process is complete. Hopefully, a problem such as this will not recur until we can fix our code. Sincerely, Mark OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of September, 1997 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Jerry Brotzge (jbrotzge@ou.edu) ================================================================================ Notes: Greetings all...as I'm now your new QA manager. The Mesonet is now becoming one with nature. Last month, we had spiders living in our T/RH shelters, worms and ants in our barometer tubes, and gophers having their temp taken. Description: | Below is an overview from Mark Shafer of the automated quality assurance results for the October 1997 Oklahoma Mesonet data. 1. CLAY RELH may have been slightly high all month. It failed the range test on several occasions, but only for a few observations per day. The QA manager did not think it was bad enough to warrant a trouble-ticket. 2. EUFA RELH had a number of failures on the 16th-17th (correctly flagged). A trouble ticket was issued on the 20th. I would advise caution from the 16th onward. 3. MEDI TAIR had 13 suspect flags on the 15th - these can be ignored. They resulted from nearby stations getting nocturnal inversions while MEDI stayed mixed. Subject: | Overview of Automated QA - November 1997 |
DataStreams: | sgp05okmX1.a1, sgp15okmX1.a1 |
Description: | Below is an overview from Mark Shafer of the automated quality assurance results for the November 1997 Oklahoma Mesonet data. 1. CLAY RELH failed 1-2 observations almost daily. No trouble-ticket, but be cautious. 2. STIL LEAF failed a number of obs on the 5th and 16th; a trouble-ticket was issued on December 13. 3. PUTN BATV (battery voltage) was erratic from the 6th - 11th; a trouble-ticket was issued on the 15th and cleared on the 24th. There is some possibility that low battery voltage may impair the performance of some sensors and high battery voltage may over-excite some sensors. I suggest caution with ANY parameters from PUTN for the 6th - 24th. 4. CHEY TAIR was flagged suspect on the 19th, 25th, and 26th; probably the result of inversions at nearby sites. CHEY is at a bit higher elevation and gets fewer inversions, consequently staying warmer at night which results in erroneous flags from the spatial QA. 5. WSSD was "stuck" (persistance indicated virtually no change) for FREE, ALVA, FAIR, LAHO and KING in NW OK and for NOWA, MIAM and VINI in NE OK on the 13th, probably stuck from freezing rain. Caution is advised for any parameters from these sites because ice can encase the radiation shield or plug a pressure port too. OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of November, 1997 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Jerry Brotzge (jbrotzge@ou.edu) ================================================================================ Notes: Greetings all... And the cow jumped over the ... Mesonet fence? Not quite, but one did get into the EUFA site, disturbing most of our soil probes and breaking an RH probe (see Oct report). EUFA should now be back to normal. Fortunately, most other sites remained relatively quiet. November's weather marked a rather rude introduction to winter. Average temperatures dropped about 10C statewide, with the average wind dir shifting from SE during Oct to NW during Nov. Rainfall varied greatly across the state, too. MTHE received 157mm while KENT received only 4mm. And that 4mm was more than likely frozen. Most of the state got about 30-40mm. So, overall an average month in the OK Mesonetwork. Description: | Below is an overview from Mark Shafer of the automated quality assurance results for the December 1997 Oklahoma Mesonet data. 1. CLAY RELH again failed 1-2 observations almost daily. No trouble-ticket, but be cautious. Symptoms ceased after the 19th (continues from November 1997). 2. STIL LEAF failed a number of obs on the 6th; a trouble-ticket was issued on December 13 (continues from November 1997). 3. Battery Voltage problems at NEWK, NOWA, and WAUR on the 4th and FREE on the 11th. Caution is advised for any data from these stations on those days. 4. More inversion flags from the 14th - 19th, especially MEDI and CHEY. These sites are a bit higher elevation and often do not get nocturnal inversions while surrounding sites do, resulting in suspect (and even a few warning flags) for TAIR and RELH. These flags during this time should be disregarded - the data are fine. 5. Numerous sites were flagged by our persistence check for TAIR on the 23rd: BOWL, CLAR, COPA, NOWA (also TA9M for NOWA), OKEM, and OKMU. There was heavy cloud cover and fog across much of Oklahoma during late December - mid January. I'm not sure whether the nearly constant temperatures reported by these sites were due to the air mass or whether the sites may have been iced by a passing storm. 6. NINN TS10 started showing problems on the 23rd and 24th. It was flagged as a failure on January 12, 1998. Caution is advised fromt he 23rd through the 12th. - Mark > OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT > for the month of December, 1997 > > Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day > > Prepared by Jerry Brotzge (jbrotzge@ou.edu) > > ================================================================================ > > Notes: Greetings all... > December was seemingly an average month weatherwise, marked by spring- > like temps and occasional arctic blasts. Description: | Below is an overview from Mark Shafer of the automated quality assurance results for the January 1998 Oklahoma Mesonet data. In summary, January 1998 had extensive cloud cover and fog during the first half of the month. TAIR, RELH, WSPD, WVEC, WSSD, and WS2M were frequently flagged at many sites around the state. The fog and light winds were the cause. A lot of these flags were from the persistence routine, as temperatures, winds, and humidity varied little throughout the day. The fog took it's toll on our sites by the 13th, as low battery voltages started showing up at BLAC, FREE and HASK. This could affect other sensors from the 13th - 15th. Once the sunshine returned on the 16th, things returned to normal. There were a few inversions (CHEY 24, 27th; MEDI 24, 29th) which were improperly flagged. MADI RELH occasionally was out-of-range (about one observation per day) from the 5th onward. It was flagged suspect on the 25th, but it is a low priority and we have not yet had a technician available to check it out. I do not think there is any overall concern with this sensor, but it is worth looking at closely. OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of January, 1998 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Chris Fiebrich (chris@mesnet.mesonet.ou.edu) ================================================================================ Notes: January turned out to be quite a mild month weatherwise. Average 1800 UTC temperatures were a couple of degrees C warmer for January than they were for December. The lack of fronts and exciting weather was also evident in a much lighter average wind field across the state for January. All the monthly averaged fields for January looked quite smooth. No new problems were found. Other than sensor rotations, the techs worked to unclog 2 more rain gauges this month in which spiders had taken up residence. In addition, several sites had to have soil temperature repairs caused by gopher damage. Description: | Below is an overview from Mark Shafer of the automated quality assurance results for the February 1998 Oklahoma Mesonet data. February was a pretty well-behaved month. The only alterations to the qa flags I would suggest are: 1. BUTL PRES - indicated errors on the first and flagged as warning (2) on March 17. No other errors were noted during February, but it warrants taking a close look at the data. 2. SPEN BATV - flagged as suspect from the 6th through 13th. Low battery voltage may affect the performance of other sensors, so all data should be used with caution for this site during the seven-day period. OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of February, 1998 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Chris Fiebrich (chris@mesnet.mesonet.ou.edu) ================================================================================ Note: It was recently discovered that an error occurred while sending this report a couple of weeks ago. Therefore, most of you never received it. I apologize for this delay. February turned out to be another mild month weatherwise. Average 1800 UTC temperatures were about 50 F for the month -- not bad for February. The northern 1/3 of the state was quite dry with most stations there reporting less than 1 inch of accumlated rainfall for the month. This contrasts with many 3+ inch totals observed at the southwest and southeast Oklahoma sites. The monthly averaged fields for February looked quite smooth. They did, however, seem to indicate a slight pressure bias at WEBB and a TS30 bias at A181. 7 T/RH sensors were replaced across the ARS and MESOnetworks after biases were found by on-site meso-comparison tests. The TB10 sensor at MCAL was stolen by a gopher in early February. No arrests have been made at this time. ================================================================================ TAIR (Air Temperature at 1.5 meters): Current t-tkts: #1694 ALVA Temperature fell to -64 C. Description: | Below is an overview from Mark Shafer of the automated quality assurance results for the March 1998 Oklahoma Mesonet data. The QA flags seemed pretty reliable this month. I noticed that several sites RELH was flagged by our persistence routine on the 15th - 16th (BEAV, SLAP; CHEY, NINN, WATO). Because there were a number of sites and were in a reasonably coherent geographic configuration, I think these flags are probably false. The only other notable feature was a few flags for ALVA TB05 from the 20th - 22nd. These did not warrant a trouble-ticket, although we are keeping a close watch on it. One other item of note, our Tullahassee Mesonet site was picked clean by vandals on the 29th. They even climbed the tower to steal the wind monitor and dug up our soil temperature probes! The instruments were replaced on April 8th (some were not available until May 12), so the down time wasn't too bad. The event is properly flagged in the QA files. > OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT > for the month of March, 1998 > > Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day > > Prepared by Chris Fiebrich (chris@mesnet.mesonet.ou.edu) > > ================================================================================ > > March was a busy month for the Mesonet technicians. Description: | Below is an overview from Mark Shafer and Chris Fiebrich, the Mesonet QA manager of the automated quality assurance results for the April 1998 Oklahoma Mesonet data. 1. RETR RELH - April 6 flags were from a wet sensor; the flags are correct and there is no need for continuning concern after the event (from 2105-2220). 2. BBOW RELH - April 12, 9 suspect flags. Data looked ok; we suspect the inversion established at that site (lower elevation) earlier than surrounding sites. 3. EUFA TS10, TB10 - several spikes in the data on the 13th (1730-1800 UTC) and 14th (1845-2000); also affected TS05, TB05, TS30. Do not use data for these time period, but it otherwise looked ok (it was examined by a technician who could find no problems with the sensor). 4. BRIS TS10 - flagged as warning on the 14th, but should be flagged for the 13th as well (see QA manager's report below). 5. WEST BATV - April 14, voltage appeared a bit high, which may influence other instruments. 6. WYNO SRAD - started showing problems in spatial plots on the 14th; flagged as warning on the 26th; problem resolved May 5. 7. ARNE & CHEY RELH - April 15 - flagged as low, but ok - dryline affected those sites from 0155 to 0640 UTC. 8. MAYR RELH - April 20, similar effect; MAYR is at the edge of the network and the data showed an internal consistency, can ignore flags. 9. MARE RELH - April 23, data internally consistent; we suspect high RELH readings at STIL and it's very close proximity to MARE affected the spatial QA routine. 10. MINC TAIR, RELH - April 23 - did not experience an inversion like surrounding sites; instead stayed warm and dry, and caused spatial QA flags. Ignore the flags. 11. HINT WSPD, WVEC - April 27 - wind speeds higher than nearby sites, but precip at the time, suggesting perhaps thunderstorm outflow. Disregard flags. > OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK/ARS QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT > for the month of April, 1998 > > Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day > > Prepared by Chris Fiebrich (chris@mesnet.mesonet.ou.edu) > > ================================================================================ > > The monthly averaged fields for April were quite smooth. Description: | Below is an overview from Chris Fiebrich, the Mesonet QA manager of the automated quality assurance results for the May 1998 Oklahoma Mesonet data. The May Mesonet data have been posted to your server. There are a few special events that were flagged by the automatic qa that you may want to be aware of. These include: 1. HOLL PRES - May 8 Thunderstorm winds caused a significant pressure drop. This data is accurate so you can ignore the flags. 2. BESS RELH - May 21 A heat burst was measured at the site. It was a fairly localized event so the spatial test flagged the data. You can disregard those flags. 3. MAYR & NEWK WSPD, WVEC - Thunderstorm outflow produced 40+ mph sustained wind observations on the 24th and 25th. This data is believed to be true and you can ignore those flags. 4. FORA RAIN - May 25 The site received nearly double the amount of rainfall as its neighboring sites. Radar confirmed this, so we believe the data to be good. 5. BRIS RELH - May 26 flags were from a wet sensor; the flags are correct and there is no need for continuning concern after the event. 6. CLAY WSPD, WVEC - May 26 flags were caused by strong winds reported at the site during a thunderstorm. You can ignore these flags. -Chris OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK/ARS QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of May, 1998 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Chris Fiebrich (chris@mesnet.mesonet.ou.edu) ================================================================================ A number of pressure problems were corrected during the month of May. Malfunctioning barometers at ALTU and SEIL were replaced, and the barometer tubes at ANTL and STUA were 'de-wormed' (to quote Gary) to correct problems there. The SRAD field was also improved by replacing malfunctioning sensors at TULL, OKMU, and WYNO during the month of May. Some of the soil temperature sensors at BRIS and FAIR fell victim to gopher damage last month. Those sensors were replaced. The monthly QA detected a handful of possible biases in the soil sensors in both the ARS and MESO networks. Those stations included KETC, SHAW, A148, and A157. Those sensors will be investigated in the coming weeks. ================================================================================ TAIR Current: None Added: None Resolved: #1780 MAYR Instrument replaced RELH Current: #1731 CLAY Sensor reporting -7999 on various occassions #1810 KING Monthly QA shows 1.5 - 2.0 C TDEW warm bias #1814 MARS Sensor reporting as high as 110% Added: None Resolved: #1824 HOBA Sensor replaced WDIR Current: None Added: None Resolved: #1770 TULL Sensor replaced due to vandalism WSPD Current: None Added: None Resolved: #1826 FORA Noisy bearings replaced PRES Current: None Added: None Resolved: #1751 ALTU Sensor replaced #1809 SEIL Sensor replaced #1820 ANTL Replaced worm-clogged barometer tube #1836 STUA Replaced worm-clogged barometer tube SRAD Current: #1839 HOOK Reporting -1 for extended periods at night #1843 GRAN Reporting values ~70% too low Added: None Resolved: #1761 TULL Sensor replaced after vandalism #1765 OKMU Sensor replaced to correct 10% bias #1781 MAYR Sensor reporting <0 due to bad TAIR switch #1802 WYNO Sensor replaced RAIN Current: None Added: None Resolved: #1818 PRES New switch installed to fix under-reporting #1829 CAMA Gauge with bucket off bearings replaced #1799 COPA New switch installed to fix under-reporting TA9M Current: None Added: None Resolved: None WS2M Current: None Added: None Resolved: None TS10 Current: None Added: None Resolved: #1790 BRIS Gopher damage; sensor replaced #1777 MEDI Sensor replaced to correct warm bias #1833 FAIR Replaced gopher-damaged sensor TB10 Current: #1779 WILB Monthly QA suggests 4 C cool bias Added: None Resolved: #1782 MAYR Sensor replaced TS05 Current: None Added: #1846 KETC Monthly QA suggests 2-3 C cool bias #1847 SHAW Monthly QA suggests 3-6 C cool bias Resolved: #1811 BRIS Gopher damage; sensor replaced TB05 Current: #1808 WOOD Monthly QA suggests possible 4 C warm bias Added: #1845 KETC Monthly QA suggests 2-3 C warm bias Resolved: None TS30 Current: #1704 EUFA Sensor reporting -9999 due to lightning Added: None Resolved: None ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ARS QA REPORT ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TAIR Current: None Added: None Resolved: None RELH Current: None Added: None Resolved: #1813 A182 Sensor replaced SRAD Current: None Added: #1848 A131 Obs too low after sunrise and before sunset Resolved: None RAIN Current: None Added: None Resolved: #1830 A111 Reed switch changed TS05 Current: #1816 A148 Monthly QA suggests possible 2-4 C warm bias #1817 A157 Monthly QA suggests possible 2 C cool bias Added: #1849 A123 PM readings are ~10 C cooler than neighbors Resolved: None TS10 Current: #1831 A157 Spatial QA shows a possible 8 C cool bias Added: None Resolved: #1815 A166 2 C cool bias found; sensor replaced TS15 Current: None Added: None Resolved: None TS30 Current: #1825 A147 Sensor reporting ~5 C too warm Added: None Resolved: #1834 A166 Sensor replaced ============================================================================== LEGEND TAIR Air Temperature measured at 1.5 meters RELH Relative Humidity measured at 1.5 meters WDIR Wind Direction measured at 10 meters WSPD Wind Speed measured at 10 meters PRES Pressure SRAD Incident Solar Radiation RAIN Rainfall TA9M Air Temperature measured at 9 meters WS2M Wind Speed measured at 2 meters TS10 Soil Temperature measured at 10 cm under native sod TB10 Soil Temperature measured at 10 cm under bare soil TS05 Soil Temperature measured at 5 cm under native sod TB05 Soil Temperature measured at 5 cm under bare soil TS15 Soil Temperature measured at 15 cm under native sod TS30 Soil Temperature measured at 30 cm under native sod ============================================================================== Chris Fiebrich July 5, 1998 |

Description: | Below is an overview from Chris Fiebrich, the Mesonet QA manager of the automated quality assurance results for the July 1998 Oklahoma Mesonet data. The soil temperature data was the hardest set of parameters to quality assure for this time period. As we well remember, July was extremely hot and dry across the state. The soil temperatures under native sod caused the most problems. Many SOD plots essentially became BARE plots as vegetation slowly provided less and less insulation from the heat. This caused the automatic spatial QA to flag a number of stations during the hot afternoons. These stations include: MANG TS05, NORM TS05, TIPT TS05/TS10, FTCB TS05/TS10/TS30, and BRIS TS05. We believe that these sensors are ok, and did not include them in our badparm table. However, you may notice some 'suspect' flags on them from the automatic QA. There are a few additional special events that were flagged by the automatic qa that you may want to be aware of. These include: 1. BOIS RELH - (July 1) flags were caused by a wet sensor; the flags are correct and there is no need for continuning concern after the event. 2. BOWL and MTHE TAIR - (July 2) Thunderstorm outflow caused these sites to be spatially off with respect to neighboring sites. You can ignore the flags. 3. MINC WSPD/WVEC/WMAX and PAWN WMAX - (July 8) Strong thunderstorms produced wind gusts over 40 mph at these sites. We believe this data to be correct, and you can ignore the flags. 4. MAYR TAIR/WSPD - (July 10) Thunderstorms caused these flags. Disregard the flags. 5. CAMA SRAD - (July 17 through July 31) Lightning occurred at the site on July 17. Ever since then, the solar radiation has been reporting slightly negative readings overnight (usually -1). Otherwise, the data is fine, and you can disregard the flags. 6. ARNE RELH/TAIR - (July 24 and 26) Thunderstorm outflow caused this site to be spatially inconsistent with neighboring sites. You can disregard the flags. 7. BREC TAIR - (July 25) Thunderstorm outflow cooled this site down and caused the QA flags. You can ignore the flags. -Chris =========================================================================== == OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK/ARS QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of July, 1998 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Chris Fiebrich (chris@mesnet.mesonet.ou.edu) =========================================================================== ===== Soil temperature sensors have been the hardest to quality assure over the past month. Due to the daily occurrence of many soil sensors reaching 50+ C (for the first time in the Mesonet's history!), we raised the maximum range on the 5 cm bare and sod sensors to 55 C. The prescence of dry, cracked ground in many locations has also contributed to much greater than normal variations in the observed soil temperatures at neighboring sites. The hotspot: The monthly-averaged Air Temperature field for 1800 UTC revealed Walters, OK as the hottest location. WALT's average 1800 UTC temperature was 37.3 C (99.1 F). Not only did WALT have the highest average 1800 UTC temperature, but the average high at WALT for the month was 104.7! (thanks for that fact, Derek). Description: | Below is an overview from Chris Fiebrich, the Mesonet QA manager of the automated quality assurance results for the June 1998 Oklahoma Mesonet data. The June Mesonet data have been posted to your server. The soil temperature data was the hardest set of parameters to quality assure for this time period (and it continues to be for July and August). A number of stations began to reach 50+ C at the 5 cm level, so we felt it best to raise the maximum of the range for the 5 cm soil temperatures both under sod and under bare soil to 55 C. The hot, dry conditions also contributed to much greater than normal variations in the observed soil temperatures, depending on the presence of cracked ground and dead vegetation. We believe that in general things are functioning well with these sensors. However, the automatic spatial QA created a number of flags for the 5 and 10 cm soil temperatures. Throughout the month, you may note a number of suspect flags on FTCB TS10, FTCB TS05, TISH TS10, TISH TS05, TIPT TS05, NORM TS05, CHER TS10, MANG TS05, LAHO TB05, BESS TB05, and BRIS TS05. Until the ground is able to recover from the very dry conditions, we will be unable to determine whether or not these sensors are slightly biased. Their data should be used with caution. There are a few additional special events that were flagged by the automatic qa that you may want to be aware of. These include: 1. SEIL PRES - June 4 Thunderstorm winds caused a significant pressure drop. This data is believed to be true so you can ignore the flags. 2. DURA RELH, PRES, TS10, TB10, TS05, and TB05 - June 4 The Durant site suffered storm damage and was down for about 24 hours. The data should be used with caution through June 5 as repairs were made at the site. 3. BRIS RELH - June 8/9 flags were caused by a wet sensor; the flags are correct and there is no need for continuning concern after the event. 4. WEAT TAIR - June 8 Thunderstorm outflow caused the WEAT site to be spatially off with respect to its neighboring sites. You can ignore the flags. 5. GRAN TAIR/RELH - June 8 Rainshower caused the relative humidity at GRAN to be spatially off with respect to neighboring sites. You can ignore the flags. 6. WALT WSPD - June 10 flags caused by thunderstorm winds. You can ignore the flags. 7. MARE RELH - June 14 Rainfall caused the sensor to be wet, and report erroneously from 0100-1000 UTC. The data is good otherwise. 8. RING TAIR, WMAX, and PRES; TALI WSPD June 19 - These flags were all attributed to observations during thunderstorms. We believe the data is good, and you can ignore the flags. 9. NORM RELH June 20 - Heat burst caused the relative humidity at NORM to be spatially inconsistent with neighboring sites. You can ignore the flags. 10. RETR RELH/TAIR June 22 - Another thunderstorm event. You can dis- regard those flags. -Chris ============================================================================= OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK/ARS QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of June, 1998 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Chris Fiebrich (chris@mesnet.mesonet.ou.edu) ================================================================================ The Durant site suffered storm damage on June 4. Communications were lost to the station for about 24 hours. The datalogger, radio, and modem each had to be replaced. The new site at Vanoss was up and running on June 17. The site currently measures all of the core and supplemental parameters with the exceptions of pressure and soil moisture. Description: | Below is an overview from Chris Fiebrich, the Mesonet QA manager of the automated quality assurance results for the August 1998 Oklahoma Mesonet data. here are a few special events that were flagged by the automatic qa that you may want to be aware of. These include: * BRIS TS05 - (August 1 - August 31) The automatic QA created 15-20 suspect flags and a few warning flags each day for this site. We believe the sensor to be ok; however, the sod plot overlying the sensor was likely dead due to the drought this summer. The data should be used with caution. * The following list includes stations which experienced significant thunderstorm outflow. These events were usually isolated in nature, and therefore the data (typically TAIR) appeared to be spatially "off". We have investigated these events, and deem the data to be good. You can ignore the flags: OILT TAIR (August 2) TALI TAIR (August 3) ARDM and MTHE TAIR (August 7) BOWL TAIR (August 8) BREC TAIR and HOBA TA9M/TB05 (August 10) MTHE TAIR (August 12) PAWN TAIR (August 13) COPA TAIR (August 26) -Chris qamgr@redrock.ocs.ou.edu =========================================================================== == OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK/ARS QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of August, 1998 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Chris Fiebrich (qamgr@redrock.ocs.ou.edu) =========================================================================== ===== Notes: The NINN site was moved approximately 7 feet from its original location on August 18 due to a water main break underneath the site. It really WAS that dry... The technicians checked a number of rain gauges during the month that were suspected of under-reporting. HOLL was high on the list, since the site had observed only .03 inches of rainfall over the past 90 days. The gauge checked out fine, and Bill Wyatt reported that "the general appearance of the area indicated that children as old as 4 or 5 may not have seen rain in their lifetime." We also had a handful of soil temperatures flagged as 'suspect' because they have been repeatedly failing the spatial test during the hot after- noons. The recent rainfall across the state will hopefully help us better evaluate which sensor are biased, and which sensors are simply reporting the conditions of the dry cracked ground. During October, 74 "fix tickets" were completed. That includes replacements, repairs and rotations of sensors in the network. After the abuse the thirsty Oklahoma soil took over the summer, we were able to replace 20 soil sensors in October. Gophers were the culprit for soil temperature problems at BRIS, SALL, and PERK, while erosion caused biases in the data at IDAB and BOIS. Now that the Oklahoma skies have remembered how to rain again, we've been able to pinpoint a number of rain gauge problems and get them repaired. The gauges at HOLL, PERK, TISH, ADAX, and COPA were repaired during October. Description: | Below is an overview from Chris Fiebrich, the Mesonet QA manager of the automated quality assurance results for the December 1998 Oklahoma Mesonet data. here are a number of special events that were flagged by the automatic qa that you may want to be aware of. The most noteworthy problem is the inversion-poking that occurred at CHEY and MEDI frequently throughout the month. CHEY and MEDI's elevation cause them to poke above the inversion layer during some nights and mornings, and their temperature and relative humidity values are often much different than neighboring stations. You can disregard the flags that the spatial tests put on these stations when "inversion poking" is noted. Here's the breakdown: Date Station Parameter(s) ---- ------- ------------ 12/01 CHEY TAIR - Inversion poking 12/13 MEDI RELH,TAIR - Inversion poking 12/14 CHEY RELH,TAIR - Inversion poking MEDI TAIR - Inversion poking 12/16 CHEY TAIR - Inversion poking MEDI TAIR - Inversion poking 12/17 MEDI TAIR - Inversion poking 12/18 WIST RELH,TAIR - Cold-air drainage at this low-lying site caused it to be spatially inconsis- tent with neighboring stations; ignore the flags. 12/24 BBOW WS2M - Completely calm conditions held the wind speed at 2-m at 0.0 m/s all day long; this caused our persistence program to flag the data. Description: | Below is an overview from Chris Fiebrich, the Mesonet QA manager of the automated quality assurance results for the January 1999 Oklahoma Mesonet data. There are a few special events that were flagged by the automatic QA that you may want to be aware of: Date Station Parameter(s) ---- ------- ------------ 01/06 CHEY TAIR - Station poked above the cold inversion layer; disregard the flags. 01/12 SALL TAIR - Cold-air drainage at this low-lying site caused it to be spatially inconsis- tent with neighboring stations; ignore the flags. 01/18 MEDI TAIR - Station poked above the cold inversion layer; disregard the flags. 01/19 WIST RELH,TAIR - Cold-air drainage at this low-lying site caused it to be spatially inconsis- tent with neighboring stations; ignore the flags. 01/24 CHEY TAIR - Station poked above the cold inversion layer; disregard the flags. 01/28 BBOW WS2M - Completely calm conditions held the wind speed at 2-m at 0.0 m/s all day long; this caused our persistence program to flag the data. Disregard the flags. 01/30 CHAN,MIAM PRES - Wind gusts to 45+ mph caused pressure spikes; ignore the flags. -Chris Fiebrich Mesonet QA Manager ========================================================================= OKLAHOMA MESONETWORK/ARS QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT for the month of January, 1999 Based upon observations taken at 1800 UTC each day Prepared by Chris Fiebrich (qamgr@redrock.ocs.ou.edu) =========================================================================== Notes: After a fairly long dry spell, the last weekend of January brought 1 to 2 inch rainfall totals to most sites in the Mesonet. This event brought to our attention an under-reporting gauge at NOWA. Along with the rainfall, the Panhandle stations got quite a bit of freezing rain and snow. The 10-m wind sensors were most affected this time around. GOOD, BEAV, HOOK, and SLAP all had their anemometers freeze solid as the ice accumulated.
