Subject: | SGP/MFRSR/E9 - Large night-time offsets |
DataStreams: | sgpmfrsrE9.a0, sgpmfrsrE9.b1, sgpmfrsrlangleyE9.c1, sgpmfrsrlangplotE9.c1 |
Description: | Some channels (415, 673 and 940) are flatlining in the early morning and late afternoon. This is not an instrument problem per se, but a result of the new data calibration procedure combined with the way the instrument operates. This problem is noticeable when an instrument has an unusually large negative nighttime offset. The new data calibration procedure adds back the offset to daytime data. The problem arises because the MFRSR, in banding mode, doesn't allow for values less than 0. So the large offset gets added back to the global and diffuse data producing the "flatline" until raw values exceed zero. It is most noticeable on very overcast days. |

Description: | This instrument has long suffered alignment and shading problems. This DQR begins Feb 2007 and ends Feb 2008 when the instrument was removed pending the installation of a replacement system. While this is one DQR, there are two issues covered. The first is a shading problem from about 1800 UTC until sunset. This continues until Oct 31, 2007. November data actually OK, but are included in this DQR since it is a transition into the next issue. The second issue is noise in the data, primarily channels 415 and 673. This continued until the instrument was pulled from service pending replacement. Data users may find data from this instrument useful if they are careful to exclude the times when shading is an issue. The noise problem also may not be too bad to be useful for some people. |
