DataStreams: | sgpbrsC1.00, sgpbrsC1.a2, sgpbrs20sC1.a0, sgpbrs60sC1.a1 |
Description: | Downwelling shortwave (DS) values frequently drop below -10 W/m^2 at night, and are consistently 20-40 W/m^2 less than the calculated downwelling shortwave during the day in clear-sky conditions. Corrective maintenance on 12/1/2004 corrected this offset. It is not clear which CM action corrected the problem since the DS instrument cable was grounded to a new location and the DS ventilator fan was found in poor condition and was replaced. Either of these issues could have led to the problem observed in this instrument. |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/C1 - Discrepancy between measured and derived downwelling shortwave hemispheric |
DataStreams: | sgpsirsC1.b1, sgpsirs20sC1.a0 |
Description: | Measured values of downwelling hemispheric shortwave radiation were up to 40 W/m^2 higher than derived values during the afternoon hours. Analysis reveals that this is likely an artifact of the cosine response of the particular installed PSP coupled with typical uncertainties of this set of installed radiometers. That is, this particular instrument cluster seems to be producing cumulative errors on the high side of accepted values. The PSP contains the most uncertainty in measurement at this station. Users should use a derived value for the downwelling shortwave hemispheric irradiance (DS). Where DS = diffuse component + direct normal * cos(SZA) component described in the SIRS handbook Sec 7.2 available at: http://www.arm.gov/publications/tech_reports/handbooks/sirs_handbook.pdf |

Description: | After the DIR changeout on 8/27, the DLH measurements at the central facility vary significantly between pyrgeometers by as much as 65 Wm^(-2). It was discovered that the two downwelling pyrgeometers destined for C1 and E13 may have been swapped during installation. The instrument mentor is unsure of applied calibration coefficients during this DQR's time period. Backing out new downwelling longwave irradiances would be difficult in this case. Fortunately, the problem period is less than a fortnight. |

Subject: | SGP/BRS/C1 - Monthly Summary |
DataStreams: | sgpbrsC1.b1 |
Description: | Data quality this site-month is poor. This is due largely to the missing Upwelling Shortwave and Upwelling Longwave the entire month. This problem has been ongoing for several months now. DQPR # 124 asserted that the Global PSP was recording inaccurate readings. Thus, the Global PSP was changed out on the 17th by site ops. Prior to the 17th, the Global PSP was falling below nighttime empirical limits on most nights and there were severe 3 component failures during the day. The change out of the PSP mitigated the severity of the 3 component failures and eliminated the nighttime empirical limits failures. There were still substantial 3 component flags after the 17th. |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/C1 - Monthly Summary |
DataStreams: | sgpsirsC1.b1 |
Description: | dominant problem here is the daytime 3 component problem. Direct and Diffuse are always too high and Global is too low. The problem occurs around the time that the testing regime switches from twilight to daytime testing regimes or from daytime to twilight. The flags occur in significant numbers on the 1st - 5th, 8th - 20th, 24th - 28th, 30th, and 31st. The failures vary in magnitude and duration. The worst flags for a particular day is typically high level yellow, with respect to this problem. Global goes below daytime empirical limits on both the 5th and 6th for substantial periods of time. Diffuse also goes below daytime empirical limits on the 6th in the evening. Upwelling Longwave is below empirical limits on the 24th. This may not be a problem, as many sites exhibited the same problem on the same night. Exceptionally cold temperatures may be the cause. Direct also exceeds its daytime empirical limit on the 1st, 4th, 10th, 13th, 14th, and 20th. This occurs at the changeover from medium to high air mass and does not last for longer than 30 minutes. |

Subject: | SGP/BRS/C1 - Reprocess: Incorrect Calibration Coefficients |
DataStreams: | sgpbrsC1.00, sgpbrsC1.b1, sgpbrs20sC1.a0 |
Description: | Lightening strike on or near 6/2/2004 took the BRS NIP(31747E6) out of service, on or near 6/15 the NIP was replaced and the datalogger program was changed to reflect the new NIP(31343E6). On 8/5/2004 the DIR (Downwelling longwave) instrument was changed out and a new program was loaded to reflect a new DIR. The new program contained the original installed shortwave instrument calibration coefficients including NIP 31747E6. Thus from 8/5 to when the shortwave instruments were changed out on 12/3 the wrong s/n and calibration factor (i.e. 31747E6) was applied to the actual NIP(31343E6)installed at BRS C1. |

Description: | Data quality this site-month is good. The offset in the Global PSP has been much improved, with an average nighttime offset of -4 W/m^2, since measures were taken on 17 DEC 2004 to fix it. The Global PSP does not go below nighttime empirical limits all month. Global does fall below daytime empirical limits for significant time periods on the 2, 4, 5, 12, 28, 30. There were still substantial 3 component flags 17 DEC 2004. The charcteristic three component failures are present through out the month, especially closer to the end of the month. The problem is about equally as bad in the morning as the evening. The flags are usually high level yellow at their worst for any given day. Finally, there are the typical three component flags on the 29th as well, but these occur under cloudy skies. The data return to normal the next day and a cause for the problem cannot be determined. |

Description: | Starting 11/13/2006, the C1 SIRS Upwelling Shortwave (up_short_hemisp) started to show large differences in comparison to co-located E13 SIRS and C1 IRT25m. After much troubleshooting and gnashing of teeth it was discovered that rodents had chewed through the instrument cables at the bottom of the tilt tower. Cables were replaced 01/23/2007 1930GMT. |

Subject: | SGP/NIMFR/C1 - Tube heater not functioning |
DataStreams: | sgpnimfrC1.a0, sgpnimfrC1.b1 |
Description: | The tube heater is not functioning properly. On 6/27/06, site operations personnel indicated the heater plug was found to be disconnected (The heater became disconnected on 6/12/06). It was reconnected and while the head temperature returned to normal, the tube temperatures are still bad. The purpose of the tube heater is to help prevent condensation from forming on the window. The mentor has not noticed any problems with the data resulting from the tube heater malfunction. However, since the instrument is technically not fully functional, this DQR is being issued. A repair attempt was made on June 7, 2007 that resulted in the tube temperatures reaching at times into the upper 50s and sometimes even the lower 60s. The high tube temps influenced the head temperature causing it to move into the upper 40s and sometimes the lower 50s. The heater was repaired on Oct 11, 2007. Though repaired, the instrument was configured to keep the tube temp in the lower 20s (deg C). This is acceptable, though to keep with instrument specifications the setting was adjusted to keep the temps in the upper 30s (deg C). This occurred on 8 Jan, 2008. |

DataStreams: | sgpsirsC1.00, sgpsirsC1.b1, sgpsirs20sC1.a0 |
Description: | Troubleshooting of the upwelling shortwave instrument on Jan 3rd 2007 caused problems with the co-located upwelling longwave hemispheric irradiance Eppley PIR instrument (aka UIR). Data dropouts persisted from this date to the final resolution of both shortwave and longwave instrument problems. Rodents had chewed through the instrument cables. The cables were replaced 01/23/2007 1930GMT. |

Subject: | SGP/SIRS/C1 - Sensor Cable Problem |
DataStreams: | sgpsirsC1.b1, sgpsirs20sC1.a0 |
Description: | Beginning October 3, 2007, the upwelling longwave irradiance (up_long_hemisp, aka "UIR") started to spike to unreasonable values positively offset from the co-located E13 by over 100W/m2. On January 17 2008 the UIR values become consistently bad due to bad UIR dome thermistor wiring. Problem appears as a resistive offset in the dome thermistor but due to nature of failure (unknown cable problem) data correction would not yield any better data than the co-located E13 UIR instrument that is known to be operating correctly. Instrument cable replacement on 4/22 fixed the problem. Thermopile data (netIR) from this instrument is good. However, Incoming irradiance data is not correctable due to bad UIR dome thermistor wiring within the instrument cable. |

Subject: | SGP/RSS/C1 - Stability and nonlinearity corrections |
DataStreams: | sgprssC1.00, sgprssC1.b1 |
Description: | From the very beginning after deployment in May 2003 we observed several effects that we did not anticipate during the pre-deployment lab test. They were: (1) Rapid drop in responsivity; (2) Responsivity having 1/lambda wavelike periodicity; (3) Appearance of nonlinearity within 3 months; (4) Larger than expected diurnal wavelength changes and long term wavelength drift. Right away we responded with development of correction algorithms and methods. (1) and (2) are corrected to within 2-3% with biweekly lamp calibrations; (3) Nonlinearity factor is derived from calibration data and applied in correction; and (4) is efficiently corrected with Fourier correlation algorithm applied to every spectrum (once a minute). Furthermore we perform Langley regression processing (not a part of official data stream) that corrects longer term drifts in responsivity and should correct calibration lamp biases. The Vo's from Langley regressions are available via RSS web page. The overhaul of the instrument is planned to eliminate or at least reduce nonlinerarity stability problems. We hope that after the overhaul data processing would be simplified and the frequency of calibrations would be reduced. |
