Subject: | SGP/VCEIL/B1 - recurrent frequent data gaps |
DataStreams: | sgpvceil25kB1.00, sgpvceil25kB1.a1, sgpvceil25kB1.b1 |
Description: | Beginning on 07/06/2003, frequent short-term data gaps began occurring. The situation continued to worsen until the PC locked up entirely on 07/14/2003. After the computer was re-booted, the data gaps stopped and have not returned. The problem appears to be restricted entirely to the computer and does not involve the ceilometer itself. Thus, there appears to be no problem with the data records that were properly collected. |

Description: | There was a bad connection between the ceilometer and the instrument computer which resulted in a small amount of data loss on 8 days during the effected period. The data that were collected are not effected by the problem. On April 11, 34% of the data was lost and on April 1, 4% was lost. On the remaining 6 days, May 1-6, the amount of data lost was less than 2%/day. |

Description: | Large data gaps began occurring frequently at the TWP Nauru site 26 February at 06Z. Prior to 25 February, optical cross talk errors had been observed. Beginning on 25 February, data errors were observed. By 26 February, these errors were exhibiting themselves as extended data gaps. These gaps became increasingly frequent between 2/26 and 3/4. All data are missing after 20050304.1550. The instrument was replaced on 29 March and after some subsequent configuration work, the instrument was revived just after 00Z on 1 April. |

Subject: | SGP/VCEIL/B5 - Noisy Backscatter |
DataStreams: | sgpvceil25kB5.b1 |
Description: | Since October of 2004, the noise in the backscatter plots occasionally become high in amplitude for periods of time lasting anywhere from an hour or so to as much as a day. This problem appears similar to a dirty window (such as the problem at B6 last week), but the fact that the plots show high amplitude for short durations of time imply that this problem is different. Cloud base height detection appears to be unaffected. |

DataStreams: | nsavceil25kC1.b1 |
Description: | The available processed data for the NSA.C1 VCEIL for the time period indicated are incomplete. The raw data is largely complete but pre-processing is required before these data can be reprocessed to produce a complete netcdf data set. While awaiting the reprocessed data set, the intermittent data are available from the ARM Archive. Users should be aware that the data are additionally compromised by a clock drift of at least 10 minutes, though this likely has little affect on cloud detection results. The clock drift will not be addressed by the reprocessing. Note also, that the clock drift was corrected at the end of the DQR period, but it may have existed before the beginning of the DQR period. The data for this period should be used with caution. |

Description: | It appears that the sensitivity of the Darwin ceilometer was degrading over a few month period leading up to September 2005. Beginning on September 16, 2005, the instrument shifted to a particularly bad state. Looking at the backscatter data, I do not see nearly as great a day-night difference in the background as I expect and there is very little sensitivity to clouds. There was cross talk error noted with that instrument. The ceilometer was replaced on December 12. |

DataStreams: | twpvceil25kC2.b1 |
Description: | Beginning August 30, 2005, the Nauru Ceilometer periodically went into a strange operational mode where the backscatter data exhibits vertical stripes. Looking at the backscatter data - there are high amplitude oscillations occuring in the backscatter as a function of time at a given height. The phenomenon appears to be more common at night. Dates include: 30 Aug, 31 Aug, 1 Sep, 9 Sep, 15 Sep, 20 Oct, 22 Oct, 8 Dec, and others. The fiber optic link to the ceilometer was faulty and causing periodic data corruption. The problem was corrected when the fiber optic line was replaced with a hard wired RS232 link. |

Description: | The ceilometer has an internal amplifier that it sets to low or high depending on prevalant conditions. Normally, the gain is automatically set high during clear skies. The instrument produced a significant number of optical cross-talk warnings and displayed a reduced capacity to detect high clouds. The window was cleaned and the instrument was power-cycled but with no improvement. Diagnostics indicated the problem was with the compensation fiber cable. The problem was corrected by replacing this standard-window instrument (that was tilted at 16 degrees) with a tropics unit that became available. |

DataStreams: | sgpvceil25kB4.b1 |
Description: | During this period, the VCEIL window repeatedly became contaminated by bird droppings shortly after each cleaning. Detection of clouds was intermittently limited. The window warnings are contained in the status_flag data. The cleaning frequency was increased and then bird deterrent spikes were installed on 3/24/2009. Cloud height measurements are suspect when the status_string field contains the "Window contaminated" warning. |

Subject: | GRW/VCEIL/M1 - Receiver failure |
DataStreams: | grwvceil25kM1.b1 |
Description: | The AMF VCEIL had lower-than-normal laser transmitter power, ~84%, so the instrument was replaced with a spare on 4/22. The spare VCEIL had just been repaired but began to display receiver failure warnings. Diagnostic information was sent to Vaisala and we discussed either replacing the receiver with the one from the original VCEIL (with the degraded transmitter) or replacing the transmitter in the original VCEIL with the one from the spare. Vaisala recommended the latter because the original VCEIL is a much newer unit. On 5/16, the site operator replaced the transmitter in the original VCEIL with the one from the spare, realigned the optics, recalibrated the laser, and put the instrument back into service, successfully correcting the problem. The data during this period were intermittently incorrect, containing warning flags and alarms and unreasonable cloud base heights. |

If 'profile noise_h2' is off, then range correction of the signal would freeze at 2400 m, unless the algorithm has detected a cloud region. This had been designed to make profiles in CL-VIEW look less noisy and to emphasize the presence of clouds.'' |
