Description: | The sampling rate of the SGP.C1 AERI was changed 4 times during July and August 2005. Data quality is not affected but faster sampling rate means that less scans are co-added and the signal-to-noise ratio of the spectral data will be different. The C1 scan rate was increased to rapid sampling mode to support efforts at the SGP. However, a hard drive failure occurred during rapid sampling. A second hard drive was installed. We tested the new drive to make sure there was no problem by running the system at regular sampling speed. There were no problems so the AERI sampling rate was increased to rapid sampling mode. However, during observation, it was noted that the computer and hard drive could not keep up with the rapid sampling rate and the spectral data badly lagged the summary files, usually by 8 spectra. This lag time could have caused hard drive corruption because files were still being written when the system was trying to restart at 00:00 GMT. The solution to the problem was to increase the sampling rate. The sampling rates are listed below. February 10 2005-July 5 2005 Blackbodies 46 coadds each, Sky view 90 coadds July 6 2005 - July 22 2005 Blackbodies and Sky view 6 coadds each July 23 2005 - July 28 2005 hard drive failure, no data July 29 2005 - August 5 2005 Blackbodies 46 coadds each, Sky view 90 coadds August 6 2005 - present Blackbodies and Sky view 12 coadds each Dr. David Turner is preparing a VAP to reduce instrument noise when rapid sampling to the noise level of normal sampling. This VAP should correct the problem. |

Description: | The interferometer of the sgp.C1 AERI system began to fail around 1 Aug 2007. In this period of time, the interferometer was occasionally 'losing a fringe' and thus introducing phase shift errors into the data. After this happened a number of times, the interferometer would lock up and no data could be collected until site operations reset the instrument. Not all of the data collected during this period are bad (only the samples that were affected by a phase shift -- about 10% to 25% of data collected each month during the period were bad) while the rest of the data is of good quality. The instrument mentor has created Data Quality files that users can use to identify these bad samples and exclude them from their analysis. Thus, the data for this period are coded "suspect", because the lion's share of points are actually good but there is a fair number of samples that are bad and should not be used. |

Description: | On June 23, 2009, a mud dauber nest was found on the input port window of the AERI interferometer and was removed. The nest was likely responsible for significant signal loss. The nest was estimated to have covered close to 20 percent of the window. While the presence of the nest increases signal loss, the measurement values remain valid despite the obstruction. The input port obstruction due to the nest was consistent during calibration Black Body measurements as well as during sky measurements. The same may not apply during nest building or other insect activity within the instrument field of view. |

Description: | On 10 Sep 2009, an "event" happened at the SGP site which impacted the AERI instrument. This event has been documented in DQPR 2258. This event had a tremendous impact on the radiance, and in particular the noise level, in the channel 2 data (which uses the InSb detector). After much effort by the site operators and mentors, it appeared that the system was "fixed" on 5 October 2009. However, there were some weird irregularities in the dataset that were bothersome, and necessitated a more complete analysis. We (the instrument mentor team) have concluded that the fault suffered on Sept 10 affected the grounding of the InSb detector. The symptoms included a 'wandering' of the phase of the interferogram, which results in errors in calibration, as well as increased noise in the data. We have attempted to correct the data for a few days by hand, as phase errors typically can be accounted for; however, in these cases we were unable to do this satisfactorily with significant amounts of atmospheric signal remaining in the imaginary spectrum and low-frequency biases remaining in the real spectrum. [If the data are properly calibrated, then the real spectrum is what is used for science and has all of the atmospheric signal, while the imaginary spectrum should be all random noise.] Therefore, we have concluded that all radiance data from the channel 2 detector of this system, including all downstream data products that make use of these data, should be classified as INCORRECT / BAD. The channel 1 data (which is from a different detector) appears to be fine and properly calibrated. The system will be replaced with the spare AERI. |
